3 Tips When Asking For A Wedding Photography Quote

So you’ve contacted a wedding photographer and they have now offered you a quote for your wedding photographs that is within your spending limits. Congratulations! You should accept it straightaway, right? DEFINITELY NOT! You most likely could have worked out a better deal if you had actually read this article before asking for the proposal.

The majority of people do not comprehend what an estimate actually is on it’s most fundamental level. At the end of the day, this quote represents the target price the photographer is willing to exchange his/her efforts for. But, this quote represents more than the amount you will have to pay for the photographer’s time. Keeping this in mind, how can you (as the customer) reduce the amount of the quote so that it more precisely represents your idea of the value of the photographer’s time? Below are 3 considerations for you to keep in mind that may encourage a photographer to push up the value of their time, and therefore increase the asking amount from you for their services.

1) Missing details
Photographers HATE missing information when trying to quote for a wedding. More often than not, it is exceptionally challenging for professional photographers to get the appropriate level of info when they are building their quote. This is normally due to the fact that clients offer the bare minimum of details when requesting a quote. Situations aside from the amount of time a photographer will be at the occasion matter considerably. For example, if your wedding will be spread throughout numerous rooms a photographer will almost certainly need an assistant and your quote will reflect this extra expense. On the other hand, if your wedding will remain in a single space there may not be a need for the assistant. If the photographer does not have this information prior to releasing the quote, you can guarantee that the quote you get reflects the worst case situation (i.e. the additional expense for the assistant’s income, insurance, and so on).

2) Be realistic when estimating the amount of time you will require the photographer’s services
Most engaged couples overstate the amount of time they think they need a photographer to be at the wedding. Do you really require the photographer for all 5 hours of the wedding reception? How many angles do you actually require of the same people drinking champagne and eating? An hour or 2 of unneeded photographer’s time can end up being rather expensive. Although, having said that, it is always better to overestimate than underestimate the length of time you will require the photographer on-site. Giving accurate hours is the fastest way to remove unneeded expenses from your quote.

3) Be sincere about when you require the completed images delivered
If you have actually elected photo retouching, don’t request that the images be done by the next business day. If you require a few preliminary photos for thank you cards, social media, etc. following the wedding, then request for that at the time of booking the photographer – don’t make this request on the wedding day itself or, even worse, during the reception. The chances that you require ALL of the photos finished within 72 hours is rare. There is little doubt that the photographer will try to honor your demand; but in order to do so, they will have to push off other work. Pushing off work comes at a premium and will be reflected in your quote. For the most cost-effective quote, ask for the preliminary photos that you really do need straightaway and (specify exactly what these photos have to look like) and allow 7-10 business days for the remainder of the photos to be delivered to you.

In summary, supply your photographer with as much detail at the first meeting as you possibly can, set clear expectations of your needs from the start, and always be sincere with both your photographer and yourself. Follow these pointers and you’ll be cutting those over-inflated photography quotes in no time.
