3 Tips For When You Ask For A Wedding Photography Quote

So you’ve contacted a wedding photographer and they have now given you a quote for your wedding photographs that is within your spending limits. Congratulations! You should accept it immediately, right? WRONG! You probably could have worked out a better deal if you had read this short article earlier.

Most people don’t comprehend what an estimate really is on it’s most basic level. At the end of the day, this quote represents the target price the photographer wants to exchange his/her time for. However, this quote represents more than the amount you will need to pay for the photographer’s time. Keeping this in mind, how can you (as the client) reduce the stated quote so that it more accurately represents your idea of the value of the photographer’s time? Below are 3 considerations for you to keep in mind that may cause a photographer to inflate the value of their time, and therefore increase the asking amount from you for their services.

1) Lack of details
Photographers really can’t abide missing information when trying to quote for a wedding. More often than not, it is very difficult for professional photographers to gather the correct level of information when they are building their quote. This is generally because customers offer the bare minimum of info when asking for a quote. Circumstances other than the quantity of time a photographer will be at the event matter significantly. For instance, if your wedding will be spread throughout several rooms a photographer will likely need an assistant and your quote will show this added expense. On the other hand, if your wedding will remain in a single space there might not be a requirement for the assistant. If the photographer does not have this information prior to releasing the quote, you can bet that the quote you receive shows the worst case scenario (i.e. the additional expense for the assistant’s wage, insurance, etc.).

2) Be realistic when giving the amount of time you will need coverage
Most engaged couples overstate the amount of time they think that they’ll need a photographer to be at the wedding. Do you truly need the photographer for the complete wedding reception? How many angles do you truly need of the same guests drinking champagne and eating? An hour or more of unneeded service can become rather expensive. Although, having said that, it is always much better to overestimate than underestimate the length of time you will require the photographer on-site. Giving accurate hours is the fastest way to remove unneeded costs from your quote.

3) Be truthful about when you require the final photographs delivered
If you have chosen photo retouching, do not demand that the photos be completed by the next business day. If you need a few initial photos for thank you cards, Facebook or Instagram, etc. after the wedding, then ask for that at the time of booking the photographer – don’t make this request on the wedding day itself or, even worse, during the reception. The chances that you require ALL of the photos finished within 72 hours is unusual. There is little doubt that the photographer will try to honor your demand; but in order to do so, they will need to push off other work. Pushing off work comes at a premium and will be reflected in your quote. For the best quote, ask for the initial photographs that you really do need almost immediately and (be specific about what these photographs have to contain) and allow 7-10 business days for the rest of the photos to be delivered.

So to summarize, provide your photographer with as much detail when you first meet with the him/her as you possibly can, set clear expectations of your needs from the beginning, and always be sincere with both your photographer and yourself. Follow these pointers and you’ll be bringing down those over-inflated photography quotes in no time.
