Three Tips When Asking For A Wedding Photography Proposal

So you’ve contacted a wedding photographer and they have offered you a quote for your wedding photographs that is within your budget. Congratulations! You should accept it right away, right? WRONG! You most likely could have negotiated a better deal if you had read this article before asking for the proposal.

Most people do not comprehend exactly what an estimate truly is on it’s most fundamental level. At the end of the day, this quote represents the amount of money the photographer is willing to exchange his/her efforts for. However, this quote represents more than the amount you will need to pay for the photographer’s time. Keeping this in mind, how can you (as the customer) bring down the stated quote so that it more properly represents your own idea of the value of the photographer’s time? Listed below are 3 considerations for you to keep in mind that may encourage a photographer to inflate the value of their time, and therefore increase the asking amount from you for their services.

1) Missing details
Photographers HATE a lack of information when trying to quote for a wedding. Typically, it is extremely hard for professional photographers to garner the correct level of detail when they are developing their quote. This is generally due to the fact that clients offer the bare minimum of details when requesting a quote. Scenarios other than the amount of time a photographer will be at the occasion matter greatly. For example, if your wedding will be held throughout multiple rooms a photographer will likely require an assistant and your quote will reflect this extra expense. On the other hand, if your wedding will be in a single space there might not be a requirement for the assistant. If the photographer does not have this information prior to issuing the quote, you can guarantee that the quote you receive reflects the worst case situation (i.e. the additional cost for the assistant’s income, insurance, and so on).

2) Be reasonable when estimating the number of hours you will require the photographer’s services
Most people overestimate the length of time they think they need a photographer to be at the wedding. Do you truly require the photographer for all 4 hours of the wedding reception? How many different angles do you actually require of the same people drinking champagne and eating? An hour or 2 of unnecessary service can end up being quite expensive. Although, having said that, it is always much better to overestimate than underestimate the length of time you will require the photographer on-site. Giving accurate hours is the fastest method to cut unneeded expenses from your quote.

3) Be truthful about when you require the completed photos delivered
If you have elected photo editing, do not demand that the photos be finished by the next business day. If you require a few preliminary photos for thank you cards, Facebook or Instagram, etc. after the wedding, then ask for that when you are booking the photographer – don’t make this request on the day of the wedding or, even worse, during the reception. The chances that you need ALL of the photos finished within 72 hours is unusual. There is little doubt that the photographer will try to oblige your demand; however in order to do so, they will have to push off other work. Pushing off other work comes at a premium and will be reflected in your quote. For the most cost-effective quote, request the preliminary photographs that you really do need almost immediately and (be specific about what these photographs need to contain) and allow 7-10 business days for the rest of the photographs to be delivered to you.

In summary, provide your photographer with as much information when you first meet with the him/her as you possibly can, set clear expectations of your needs from the beginning, and always be honest with both your photographer and yourself. Follow these tips and you’ll be slashing into those over-inflated photography quotes in no time.
