3 Helpful Hints For When You Ask For A Wedding Photography Quote

So you’ve been in touch with a wedding photographer and they have given you a quote for your wedding photography that is within your spending limits. Congratulations! You should accept it immediately, right? WRONG! You probably could have negotiated a much better price package if you had read this short article earlier.

The majority of people do not understand exactly what an estimate actually is on it’s most fundamental level. At the end of the day, this quote represents the amount of money the photographer wants to exchange his/her time for. But, this quote represents more than the quantity you will need to pay out for the photographer’s time. Keeping this in mind, how can you (as the client) reduce the amount of the quote so that it more precisely represents your own idea of the value of the photographer’s time? Listed below are 3 considerations for you to keep in mind that may cause a photographer to increase the value of their time, and therefore increase the asking amount from you for their services.

1) Missing information
Professional photographers really can’t abide a lack of information when trying to quote for a wedding. More often than not, it is exceptionally difficult for professional photographers to get the proper level of info when they are constructing their quote. This is generally due to the fact that customers offer the bare minimum of details when asking for a quote. Situations other than the quantity of time a photographer will be at the event matter significantly. For instance, if your wedding will be spread throughout numerous rooms a photographer will almost certainly require an assistant and your quote will reflect this added expense. On the other hand, if your wedding will remain in a single space there might not be a need for the assistant. If the photographer does not have this information prior to providing the quote, you can bet that the quote you get shows the worst case circumstance (i.e. the extra expense for the assistant’s wage, insurance, etc.).

2) Be practical when giving the number of hours you will need the photographer’s services
Most people overestimate the length of time they think that they’ll need a photographer to be at the wedding. Do you really require the photographer for all 3 hours of the wedding reception? How many angles do you truly need of the same people drinking champagne and eating? An hour or more of unneeded photographer’s time can become quite costly. Although, having said that, it is always much better to overestimate than underestimate the length of time you will require the photographer on-site. Giving accurate hours is the fastest way to remove unnecessary costs from your quote.

3) Be truthful about when you need the finished images delivered
If you have actually chosen photo retouching, do not request that the images be delivered by the next business day. If you need a few preliminary images for thank you cards, Instagram, etc. following the wedding, then ask for that at the time of booking the photographer – don’t make this request on the day of the wedding or, even worse, during the reception. The chances that you need ALL of the photos finished within 72 hours is rare. There is little doubt that the photographer will attempt to honor your request; but in order to do so, they will need to push off other work. Pushing back work comes at a premium and will be reflected in your quote. For the most cost-effective quote, request the initial photographs that you really do require almost immediately and (be specific about exactly what these photos have to look like) and enable 7-10 business days for the remainder of the photographs to be delivered to you.

So to summarize, provide your photographer with as much information at the first meeting as you possibly can, set clear expectations of your needs from the start, and always be sincere with both your photographer and yourself. Follow these pointers and you’ll be slashing into those over-inflated photography quotes in no time.
