3 Helpful Tips When Asking For A Wedding Photography Quote

So you’ve been in touch with a wedding photographer and they have now offered you a quote for your wedding photographs that is within your budget. Congratulations! You should accept it right away, right? WRONG! You probably could have worked out a better price package if you had read this article earlier.

Most people don’t comprehend what a price quote actually is on it’s most fundamental level. At the end of the day, this quote represents the target price the photographer is willing to exchange his/her efforts for. However, this quote represents more than the quantity you will need to pay for the photographer’s time. Keeping this in mind, how can you (as the customer) reduce the amount of the quote so that it more accurately represents your idea of the worth of the photographer’s time? Below are 3 considerations for you to keep in mind that may cause a photographer to push up the value of their time, and therefore increase the asking amount from you for their services.

1) Lack of information
Photographers really can’t abide a lack of information when attempting to quote for a wedding. Generally, it is exceptionally hard for professional photographers to get the proper level of detail when they are developing their quote. This is normally because clients supply the bare minimum of info when asking for a quote. Circumstances aside from the amount of time a photographer will be at the occasion matter considerably. For instance, if your wedding will be held throughout multiple rooms a photographer will almost certainly need an assistant and your quote will reflect this extra expense. On the other hand, if your wedding will remain in a single room there might not be a requirement for the assistant. If the photographer does not have this information prior to providing the quote, you can guarantee that the quote you get shows the worst case circumstance (i.e. the extra expense for the assistant’s wage, insurance, etc.).

2) Be sensible when estimating the amount of time you will require coverage
Most individuals overstate the amount of time they think they require a photographer to be at the wedding. Do you actually need the photographer for the complete wedding reception? How many angles do you actually require of the same people drinking champagne and eating? An hour or 2 of unnecessary service can become rather costly. Although, having said that, it is always much better to overestimate than underestimate the length of time you will need the photographer on-site. Giving accurate hours is the fastest way to cut unnecessary costs from your quote.

3) Be sincere about when you require the completed photos delivered
If you have chosen photo editing, do not demand that the images be done by the next business day. If you need a few initial photographs for thank you cards, Facebook, etc. following the wedding, then request that at the time of booking the photographer – don’t make this request on the day of the wedding or, even worse, during the reception. The chances that you require ALL of the photos finished within 72 hours is rare. There is little doubt that the photographer will attempt to oblige your demand; but in order to do so, they will have to push off other work. Pushing back other work comes at a premium and will be reflected in your quote. For the most cost-effective quote, ask for the preliminary photos that you really do require straightaway and (be specific about exactly what these images have to contain) and permit 7-10 business days for the rest of the photographs to be delivered.

In summary, provide your photographer with as much information when you first meet with the him/her as you possibly can, set clear expectations of your needs from the onset, and always be sincere with both your photographer and yourself. Follow these suggestions and you’ll be bringing down those over-inflated photography quotes in no time.
