3 Helpful Hints When Asking For A Wedding Photography Quote

So you’ve been in touch with a wedding photographer and they have now offered you a quote for your wedding photographs that is within your budget. Congratulations! You should accept it immediately, right? DEFINITELY NOT! You most likely could have worked out a better price package if you had read this short article before asking for the proposal.

The majority of people do not comprehend what an estimate really is on it’s most basic level. At the end of the day, this quote represents the amount of money the photographer is willing to exchange his/her time for. But, this quote represents more than the quantity you will have to pay out for the photographer’s time. Keeping this in mind, how can you (as the client) reduce the stated quote so that it more properly represents your own idea of the value of the photographer’s time? Listed below are 3 considerations for you to keep in mind that may encourage a photographer to push up the value of their time, and therefore increase the asking amount from you for their services.

1) Lack of details
Professional photographers HATE a lack of information when trying to quote for a wedding. Most of the time, it is very difficult for professional photographers to gather the correct level of detail when they are constructing their quote. This is usually because clients provide the bare minimum of info when requesting a quote. Scenarios aside from the amount of time a photographer will be at the event matter significantly. For instance, if your wedding will be held throughout several rooms a photographer will likely require an assistant and your quote will show this added expense. On the other hand, if your wedding will remain in a single space there may not be a requirement for the assistant. If the photographer does not have this information prior to providing the quote, you can bet that the quote you receive reflects the worst case situation (i.e. the extra cost for the assistant’s wage, insurance, etc.).

2) Be realistic when estimating the amount of time you will require coverage
Most engaged couples overstate the amount of time they think that they’ll require a photographer to be at the wedding. Do you truly require the photographer for all 3 hours of the wedding reception? How many angles do you really require of the same guests drinking cocktails and eating? An hour or more of unnecessary photographer’s time can become quite expensive. Although, having said that, it is always much better to overestimate than underestimate the amount of time you will require the photographer on-site. Giving accurate hours is the fastest method to remove unnecessary costs from your quote.

3) Be honest about when you need the completed photos delivered
If you have elected photo retouching, don’t demand that the photos be finished by the next business day. If you need a couple of preliminary photographs for thank you cards, Facebook, etc. after the wedding, then request for that at the time of booking the photographer – don’t make this request on the day of the wedding or, even worse, during the reception. The chances that you require ALL of the photos finished within 72 hours is unusual. There is little doubt that the photographer will attempt to honor your request; however in order to do so, they will have to push off other work. Pushing off other work comes at a premium and will be reflected in your quote. For the best quote, ask for the preliminary photos that you really do require straightaway and (be specific about exactly what these photos need to contain) and allow 7-10 business days for the rest of the images to be delivered.

In summary, supply your photographer with as much information at the first meeting as you possibly can, set clear expectations of your needs from the beginning, and always be sincere with both your photographer and yourself. Follow these tips and you’ll be cutting those over-inflated photography quotes in no time.
