Three Helpful Hints When Asking For A Wedding Photography Quote

So you’ve been in touch with a wedding photographer and they have offered you a quote for your wedding photographs that is within your budget. Congratulations! You should accept it immediately, right? WRONG! You probably could have worked out a much better deal if you had read this article earlier.

Most people do not comprehend what an estimate really is on it’s most fundamental level. At the end of the day, this quote represents the amount of money the photographer wants to exchange his/her time for. But, this quote represents more than the amount you will need to pay out for the photographer’s time. Keeping this in mind, how can you (as the client) reduce the stated quote so that it more precisely represents your idea of the value of the photographer’s time? Below are 3 considerations for you to keep in mind that may encourage a photographer to inflate the value of their time, and therefore increase the asking amount from you for their services.

1) Missing details
Photographers HATE missing information when attempting to quote for a job. More often than not, it is extremely hard for photographers to garner the correct level of info when they are constructing their quote. This is generally due to the fact that customers provide the bare minimum of information when asking for a quote. Scenarios aside from the amount of time a photographer will be at the occasion matter considerably. For example, if your wedding will be spread throughout multiple rooms a photographer will almost certainly require an assistant and your quote will show this added expense. On the other hand, if your wedding will be in a single space there may not be a need for the assistant. If the photographer does not have this information prior to releasing the quote, you can bet that the quote you receive shows the worst case scenario (i.e. the extra expenditure for the assistant’s income, insurance, and so on).

2) Be practical when giving the amount of time you will need coverage
Most people overstate the length of time they think they need a photographer to be at the wedding. Do you really require the photographer for the complete wedding reception? How many angles do you truly require of the same guests drinking champagne and eating? An hour or two of unneeded service can become quite expensive. Although, having said that, it is always much better to overestimate than underestimate the length of time you will require the photographer on-site. Giving accurate hours is the fastest method to remove unnecessary costs from your quote.

3) Be truthful about when you require the final photographs delivered
If you have elected photo retouching, do not demand that the photographs be delivered by the next business day. If you need a few initial images for thank you cards, Instagram, etc. following the wedding, then ask for that when you are booking the photographer – don’t make this request on the wedding day itself or, even worse, during the reception. The chances that you need ALL of the photos finished within 72 hours is unlikely. There is little doubt that the photographer will try to oblige your request; however in order to do so, they will have to push off other work. Pushing back work comes at a premium and will be shown in your quote. For the best quote, ask for the initial photos that you really do need almost immediately and (specify exactly what these images have to look like) and permit 7-10 business days for the rest of the photographs to be delivered to you.

In summary, supply your photographer with as much information when you first meet with the him/her as you possibly can, set clear expectations of your needs from the beginning, and always be honest with both your photographer and yourself. Follow these pointers and you’ll be slashing into those over-inflated photography quotes in no time.
