3 Helpful Tips For When You Ask For A Wedding Photography Quote

So you’ve been in touch with a wedding photographer and they have given you a quote for your wedding photographs that is within your budget. Congratulations! You should accept it right away, right? WRONG! You probably could have worked out a much better deal if you had actually read this article before asking for the proposal.

The majority of people do not comprehend exactly what an estimate really is on it’s most basic level. At the end of the day, this quote represents the amount of money the photographer is willing to exchange his/her time for. However, this quote represents more than the amount you will have to pay out for the photographer’s time. Keeping this in mind, how can you (as the client) reduce the stated quote so that it more precisely represents your idea of the value of the photographer’s time? Listed below are 3 considerations for you to keep in mind that may encourage a photographer to increase the value of their time, and therefore increase the asking amount from you for their services.

1) Missing information
Professional photographers really can’t abide missing information when trying to quote for a wedding. Typically, it is exceptionally difficult for professional photographers to get the correct level of information when they are building their quote. This is normally because customers offer the bare minimum of information when requesting a quote. Scenarios besides the amount of time a photographer will be at the event matter considerably. For instance, if your wedding will be spread throughout multiple rooms a photographer will almost certainly require an assistant and your quote will show this extra expense. On the other hand, if your wedding will remain in a single room there may not be a need for the assistant. If the photographer does not have this information prior to providing the quote, you can guarantee that the quote you get shows the worst case scenario (i.e. the extra cost for the assistant’s wage, insurance coverage, etc.).

2) Be reasonable when estimating the amount of time you will need the photographer’s services
Most people overstate the amount of time they think they need a photographer to be at the wedding. Do you truly require the photographer for the complete wedding reception? How many different angles do you actually require of the same guests drinking cocktails and eating? An hour or 2 of unneeded photographer’s time can become quite costly. Although, having said that, it is always better to overestimate than underestimate the length of time you will need the photographer on-site. Giving accurate hours is the fastest way to remove unnecessary costs from your quote.

3) Be honest about when you need the completed images delivered
If you have chosen photo editing, don’t demand that the images be done by the next business day. If you require a couple of preliminary photos for thank you cards, Facebook, etc. immediately after the wedding, then request for that at the time of booking the photographer – don’t make this request on the day of the wedding or, even worse, during the reception. The chances that you need ALL of the photos finished within 72 hours is rare. There is little doubt that the photographer will try to honor your demand; but in order to do so, they will have to push off other work. Pushing off other work comes at a premium and will be shown in your quote. For the best quote, request the preliminary photographs that you really do need straightaway and (specify exactly what these images need to contain) and enable 7-10 business days for the remainder of the images to be delivered.

In summary, provide your photographer with as much information at the first meeting as you possibly can, set clear expectations of your needs from the start, and always be honest with both your photographer and yourself. Follow these pointers and you’ll be cutting those over-inflated photography quotes in no time.
