Three Helpful Tips When Asking For A Wedding Photography Proposal

So you’ve called a wedding photographer and they have now provided you a quote for your wedding photographs that is within your spending limits. Congratulations! You should accept it right away, right? DEFINITELY NOT! You probably could have worked out a much better deal if you had actually read this article before asking for the proposal.

Most people don’t comprehend what a price quote truly is on it’s most fundamental level. At the end of the day, this quote represents the amount of money the photographer wants to exchange his/her time for. But, this quote represents more than the amount you will have to pay for the photographer’s time. Keeping this in mind, how can you (as the client) reduce the amount of the quote so that it more accurately represents your own idea of the worth of the photographer’s time? Below are 3 considerations for you to keep in mind that may cause a photographer to increase the value of their time, and therefore increase the asking amount from you for their services.

1) Lack of details
Professional photographers really can’t abide a lack of information when trying to quote for a wedding. Typically, it is extremely challenging for photographers to gather the correct level of information when they are constructing their quote. This is usually because customers offer the bare minimum of info when asking for a quote. Situations aside from the amount of time a photographer will be at the event matter considerably. For instance, if your wedding will be held throughout multiple rooms a photographer will likely require an assistant and your quote will show this extra expense. On the other hand, if your wedding will be in a single room there may not be a requirement for the assistant. If the photographer does not have this information prior to providing the quote, you can bet that the quote you receive shows the worst case situation (i.e. the extra expenditure for the assistant’s wage, insurance coverage, etc.).

2) Be reasonable when estimating the number of hours you will require the photographer’s services
Most engaged couples overstate the length of time they think that they’ll require a photographer to be at the wedding. Do you truly require the photographer for the complete wedding reception? How many different angles do you truly need of the same people drinking champagne and eating? An hour or more of unnecessary service can become quite costly. Although, having said that, it is always better to overestimate than underestimate the length of time you will need the photographer on-site. Giving accurate hours is the fastest way to cut unneeded costs from your quote.

3) Be honest about when you require the finished images delivered
If you have elected photo enhancements, do not request that the photos be delivered by the next business day. If you require a couple of initial photos for thank you cards, social media, etc. following the wedding, then ask for that at the time of booking the photographer – don’t make this request on the wedding day itself or, even worse, during the reception. The chances that you require ALL of the photos finished within 72 hours is unlikely. There is little doubt that the photographer will attempt to honor your request; but in order to do so, they will need to push off other work. Pushing off other work comes at a premium and will be shown in your quote. For the best quote, ask for the preliminary photographs that you really do require almost immediately and (be specific about exactly what these images have to look like) and enable 7-10 business days for the remainder of the images to be delivered to you.

In summary, provide your photographer with as much information at the first meeting as you possibly can, set clear expectations of your needs from the beginning, and always be sincere with both your photographer and yourself. Follow these pointers and you’ll be bringing down those over-inflated photography quotes in no time.
