3 Tips For When You Ask For A Wedding Photography Proposal

So you’ve been in touch with a wedding photographer and they have now offered you a quote for your wedding photographs that is within your budget. Congratulations! You should accept it right away, right? WRONG! You most likely could have worked out a better price package if you had read this short article earlier.

Most people do not understand exactly what an estimate really is on it’s most fundamental level. At the end of the day, this quote represents the amount of money the photographer wants to exchange his/her time for. But, this quote represents more than the amount you will need to pay out for the photographer’s time. Keeping this in mind, how can you (as the customer) reduce the amount of the quote so that it more precisely represents your idea of the value of the photographer’s time? Below are 3 considerations for you to keep in mind that may cause a photographer to push up the value of their time, and therefore increase the asking amount from you for their services.

1) Lack of information
Professional photographers HATE missing information when trying to quote for a wedding. Most of the time, it is extremely challenging for photographers to garner the correct level of information when they are developing their quote. This is generally because clients supply the bare minimum of details when requesting a quote. Scenarios aside from the quantity of time a photographer will be at the occasion matter greatly. For instance, if your wedding will be held throughout several rooms a photographer will probably need an assistant and your quote will reflect this added expense. On the other hand, if your wedding will remain in a single space there may not be a need for the assistant. If the photographer does not have this information prior to providing the quote, you can guarantee that the quote you receive shows the worst case situation (i.e. the extra expenditure for the assistant’s wage, insurance coverage, etc.).

2) Be practical when giving the number of hours you will need coverage
Most engaged couples overstate the amount of time they think they need a photographer to be at the wedding. Do you really need the photographer for all 3 hours of the wedding reception? How many different angles do you really need of the same guests drinking cocktails and eating? An hour or 2 of unneeded photographer’s time can become quite expensive. Although, having said that, it is always much better to overestimate than underestimate the amount of time you will require the photographer on-site. Giving accurate hours is the fastest method to cut unneeded expenses from your quote.

3) Be sincere about when you require the final photographs delivered
If you have elected photo enhancements, don’t request that the images be done by the next business day. If you need a few preliminary images for thank you cards, Facebook, etc. immediately after the wedding, then request that when you are booking the photographer – don’t make this request on the day of the wedding or, even worse, during the reception. The chances that you need ALL of the photos finished within 72 hours is rare. There is little doubt that the photographer will try to oblige your demand; but in order to do so, they will have to push off other work. Pushing back other work comes at a premium and will be shown in your quote. For the best quote, ask for the preliminary photographs that you really do require almost immediately and (specify what these photos need to look like) and allow 7-10 business days for the rest of the photographs to be delivered to you.

In summary, supply your photographer with as much information when you first meet with the him/her as you possibly can, set clear expectations of your needs from the beginning, and always be honest with both your photographer and yourself. Follow these tips and you’ll be slashing into those over-inflated photography quotes in no time.
