3 Helpful Tips When Asking For A Wedding Photography Quote

So you’ve been in touch with a wedding photographer and they have given you a quote for your wedding photographs that is within your budget. Congratulations! You should accept it straightaway, right? DEFINITELY NOT! You most likely could have worked out a better price package if you had read this short article earlier.

The majority of people don’t understand exactly what an estimate really is on it’s most basic level. At the end of the day, this quote represents the amount of money the photographer is willing to exchange his/her efforts for. However, this quote represents more than the quantity you will need to pay for the photographer’s time. Keeping this in mind, how can you (as the customer) bring down the stated quote so that it more accurately represents your idea of the value of the photographer’s time? Listed below are 3 considerations for you to keep in mind that may encourage a photographer to inflate the value of their time, and therefore increase the asking amount from you for their services.

1) Lack of information
Professional photographers HATE missing information when trying to quote for a job. More often than not, it is extremely tough for photographers to garner the proper level of info when they are constructing their quote. This is generally due to the fact that customers offer the bare minimum of details when asking for a quote. Scenarios aside from the quantity of time a photographer will be at the event matter significantly. For example, if your wedding will be spread throughout several rooms a photographer will almost certainly need an assistant and your quote will show this added expense. On the other hand, if your wedding will be in a single room there might not be a need for the assistant. If the photographer does not have this information prior to providing the quote, you can guarantee that the quote you receive reflects the worst case scenario (i.e. the extra expense for the assistant’s wage, insurance coverage, and so on).

2) Be reasonable when estimating the amount of time you will need coverage
Most people overstate the length of time they think they require a photographer to be at the wedding. Do you really need the photographer for all 4 hours of the wedding reception? How many different angles do you actually require of the same people drinking champagne and eating? An hour or 2 of unneeded photographer’s time can become quite costly. Although, having said that, it is always much better to overestimate than underestimate the length of time you will require the photographer on-site. Giving accurate hours is the fastest method to remove unnecessary expenses from your quote.

3) Be honest about when you need the completed images delivered
If you have chosen photo enhancements, do not demand that the photographs be done by the next business day. If you require a couple of initial photos for thank you cards, Instagram, etc. following the wedding, then request for that at the time of booking the photographer – don’t make this request on the wedding day itself or, even worse, during the reception. The chances that you need ALL of the photos finished within 72 hours is unlikely. There is little doubt that the photographer will try to honor your request; however in order to do so, they will have to push off other work. Pushing back other work comes at a premium and will be shown in your quote. For the best quote, request the initial photographs that you really do need almost immediately and (be specific about what these images need to look like) and allow 7-10 business days for the rest of the photos to be delivered.

In summary, supply your photographer with as much information when you first meet with the him/her as you possibly can, set clear expectations of your needs from the start, and always be sincere with both your photographer and yourself. Follow these tips and you’ll be bringing down those over-inflated photography quotes in no time.
