Three Helpful Hints For When You Ask For A Wedding Photography Proposal

So you’ve called a wedding photographer and they have now offered you a quote for your wedding photography that is within your budget. Congratulations! You should accept it straightaway, right? WRONG! You probably could have worked out a much better deal if you had read this short article before asking for the quote.

The majority of people don’t understand exactly what an estimate really is on it’s most fundamental level. At the end of the day, this quote represents the target price the photographer is willing to exchange his/her efforts for. However, this quote represents more than the amount you will have to pay for the photographer’s time. Keeping this in mind, how can you (as the client) reduce the stated quote so that it more accurately represents your own idea of the worth of the photographer’s time? Listed below are 3 considerations for you to keep in mind that may cause a photographer to increase the value of their time, and therefore increase the asking amount from you for their services.

1) Lack of details
Professional photographers HATE missing information when trying to quote for a job. Most of the time, it is incredibly difficult for professional photographers to gather the proper level of information when they are building their quote. This is typically because clients offer the bare minimum of information when asking for a quote. Scenarios aside from the quantity of time a photographer will be at the event matter considerably. For instance, if your wedding will be held throughout several rooms a photographer will likely need an assistant and your quote will reflect this extra expense. On the other hand, if your wedding will remain in a single room there might not be a requirement for the assistant. If the photographer does not have this information prior to providing the quote, you can bet that the quote you get reflects the worst case scenario (i.e. the extra expenditure for the assistant’s income, insurance coverage, etc.).

2) Be practical when estimating the amount of time you will need coverage
Most engaged couples overestimate the amount of time they think that they’ll need a photographer to be at the wedding. Do you truly require the photographer for all 3 hours of the wedding reception? How many angles do you really require of the same people drinking champagne and eating? An hour or more of unnecessary photographer’s time can become rather expensive. Although, having said that, it is always much better to overestimate than underestimate the length of time you will need the photographer on-site. Giving accurate hours is the fastest method to cut unneeded costs from your quote.

3) Be truthful about when you require the finished photos delivered
If you have elected photo editing, don’t request that the images be delivered by the next business day. If you need a few preliminary photos for thank you cards, Facebook, etc. after the wedding, then request for that at the time of booking the photographer – don’t make this request on the wedding day itself or, even worse, during the reception. The chances that you require ALL of the photos finished within 72 hours is rare. There is little doubt that the photographer will attempt to oblige your request; however in order to do so, they will need to push off other work. Pushing off work comes at a premium and will be reflected in your quote. For the best quote, ask for the preliminary images that you really do need straightaway and (be specific about exactly what these images have to contain) and permit 7-10 business days for the remainder of the photos to be delivered to you.

So to summarize, supply your photographer with as much information at the first meeting as you possibly can, set clear expectations of your needs from the start, and always be sincere with both your photographer and yourself. Follow these pointers and you’ll be slashing into those over-inflated photography quotes in no time.
