3 Helpful Hints For When You Ask For A Wedding Photography Quote

So you’ve been in touch with a wedding photographer and they have given you a quote for your wedding photographs that is within your spending limits. Congratulations! You should accept it immediately, right? WRONG! You probably could have negotiated a better price package if you had actually read this short article before asking for the proposal.

Most people don’t understand what an estimate really is on it’s most fundamental level. At the end of the day, this quote represents the amount of money the photographer wants to exchange his/her time for. However, this quote represents more than the amount you will have to pay out for the photographer’s time. Keeping this in mind, how can you (as the client) reduce the stated quote so that it more properly represents your own idea of the value of the photographer’s time? Below are 3 considerations for you to keep in mind that may cause a photographer to inflate the value of their time, and therefore increase the asking amount from you for their services.

1) Lack of information
Professional photographers HATE a lack of information when trying to quote for a job. More often than not, it is very hard for professional photographers to garner the appropriate level of info when they are constructing their quote. This is generally because clients offer the bare minimum of info when asking for a quote. Scenarios besides the quantity of time a photographer will be at the occasion matter significantly. For instance, if your wedding will be held throughout multiple rooms a photographer will likely need an assistant and your quote will reflect this added expense. On the other hand, if your wedding will be in a single space there may not be a requirement for the assistant. If the photographer does not have this information prior to releasing the quote, you can bet that the quote you get shows the worst case circumstance (i.e. the additional expense for the assistant’s income, insurance coverage, etc.).

2) Be sensible when giving the amount of time you will need the photographer’s services
Most engaged couples overstate the amount of time they think that they’ll need a photographer to be at the wedding. Do you really require the photographer for the complete wedding reception? How many angles do you truly need of the same people drinking champagne and eating? An hour or 2 of unnecessary photographer’s time can end up being rather expensive. Although, having said that, it is always better to overestimate than underestimate the amount of time you will need the photographer on-site. Giving accurate hours is the fastest way to remove unneeded costs from your quote.

3) Be sincere about when you need the finished photographs delivered
If you have chosen photo enhancements, do not request that the photographs be completed by the next business day. If you require a couple of initial photos for thank you cards, Facebook or Instagram, etc. after the wedding, then ask for that at the time of booking the photographer – don’t make this request on the day of the wedding or, even worse, during the reception. The chances that you need ALL of the photos finished within 72 hours is rare. There is little doubt that the photographer will try to honor your demand; however in order to do so, they will have to push off other work. Pushing back other work comes at a premium and will be shown in your quote. For the best quote, ask for the initial photographs that you really do need straightaway and (be specific about what these photos need to contain) and allow 7-10 business days for the remainder of the photographs to be delivered.

So to summarize, provide your photographer with as much information at the first meeting as you possibly can, set clear expectations of your needs from the beginning, and always be honest with both your photographer and yourself. Follow these pointers and you’ll be cutting those over-inflated photography quotes in no time.
