Three Helpful Tips When Asking For A Wedding Photography Proposal

So you’ve been in touch with a wedding photographer and they have provided you a quote for your wedding photography that is within your budget. Congratulations! You should accept it straightaway, right? WRONG! You most likely could have worked out a much better price package if you had actually read this article before asking for the quote.

The majority of people do not comprehend what an estimate really is on it’s most fundamental level. At the end of the day, this quote represents the target price the photographer wants to exchange his/her efforts for. However, this quote represents more than the quantity you will have to pay out for the photographer’s time. Keeping this in mind, how can you (as the client) bring down the stated quote so that it more accurately represents your own idea of the value of the photographer’s time? Listed below are 3 considerations for you to keep in mind that may cause a photographer to increase the value of their time, and therefore increase the asking amount from you for their services.

1) Lack of details
Professional photographers really can’t abide a lack of information when trying to quote for a job. Generally, it is exceptionally difficult for photographers to gather the proper level of info when they are constructing their quote. This is typically due to the fact that customers supply the bare minimum of info when asking for a quote. Situations aside from the quantity of time a photographer will be at the occasion matter considerably. For instance, if your wedding will be spread throughout several rooms a photographer will almost certainly require an assistant and your quote will show this extra expense. On the other hand, if your wedding will be in a single space there may not be a requirement for the assistant. If the photographer does not have this information prior to providing the quote, you can guarantee that the quote you receive reflects the worst case circumstance (i.e. the additional expense for the assistant’s income, insurance coverage, and so on).

2) Be practical when giving the number of hours you will require the photographer’s services
Most people overstate the amount of time they think that they’ll need a photographer to be at the wedding. Do you truly require the photographer for all 5 hours of the wedding reception? How many angles do you truly require of the same people drinking champagne and eating? An hour or more of unneeded photographer’s time can become rather expensive. Although, having said that, it is always better to overestimate than underestimate the length of time you will require the photographer on-site. Giving accurate hours is the fastest way to cut unnecessary expenses from your quote.

3) Be sincere about when you need the final images delivered
If you have elected photo editing, do not request that the photos be done by the next business day. If you require a few initial photos for thank you cards, Facebook, etc. after the wedding, then request that when you are booking the photographer – don’t make this request on the wedding day itself or, even worse, during the reception. The chances that you need ALL of the photos finished within 72 hours is unlikely. There is little doubt that the photographer will attempt to honor your request; but in order to do so, they will have to push off other work. Pushing off other work comes at a premium and will be shown in your quote. For the best quote, ask for the preliminary photos that you really do need almost immediately and (specify exactly what these photos have to contain) and allow 7-10 business days for the rest of the images to be delivered.

So to summarize, provide your photographer with as much detail when you first meet with the him/her as you possibly can, set clear expectations of your needs from the beginning, and always be truthful with both your photographer and yourself. Follow these pointers and you’ll be slashing into those over-inflated photography quotes in no time.
