3 Tips When Asking For A Wedding Photography Proposal

So you’ve called a wedding photographer and they have provided you a quote for your wedding photographs that is within your budget. Congratulations! You should accept it immediately, right? WRONG! You most likely could have worked out a better deal if you had actually read this article before asking for the proposal.

Most people do not understand what an estimate really is on it’s most fundamental level. At the end of the day, this quote represents the target price the photographer wants to exchange his/her time for. But, this quote represents more than the quantity you will need to pay for the photographer’s time. Keeping this in mind, how can you (as the customer) bring down the stated quote so that it more accurately represents your own idea of the worth of the photographer’s time? Listed below are 3 considerations for you to keep in mind that may encourage a photographer to increase the value of their time, and therefore increase the asking amount from you for their services.

1) Lack of details
Professional photographers HATE missing information when trying to quote for a job. Most of the time, it is exceptionally challenging for professional photographers to gather the appropriate level of detail when they are developing their quote. This is usually because customers supply the bare minimum of information when requesting a quote. Situations besides the amount of time a photographer will be at the event matter greatly. For example, if your wedding will be spread throughout multiple rooms a photographer will almost certainly need an assistant and your quote will show this added expense. On the other hand, if your wedding will be in a single room there may not be a need for the assistant. If the photographer does not have this information prior to providing the quote, you can bet that the quote you get reflects the worst case scenario (i.e. the extra expenditure for the assistant’s wage, insurance, etc.).

2) Be sensible when estimating the amount of time you will require coverage
Most individuals overestimate the length of time they think that they’ll require a photographer to be at the wedding. Do you actually require the photographer for all 5 hours of the wedding reception? How many angles do you actually require of the same guests drinking champagne and eating? An hour or two of unnecessary service can become quite expensive. Although, having said that, it is always better to overestimate than underestimate the amount of time you will need the photographer on-site. Giving accurate hours is the fastest way to remove unneeded costs from your quote.

3) Be truthful about when you need the completed photos delivered
If you have chosen photo editing, do not request that the photographs be done by the next business day. If you need a few preliminary images for thank you cards, Facebook or Instagram, etc. after the wedding, then request that at the time of booking the photographer – don’t make this request on the wedding day itself or, even worse, during the reception. The chances that you need ALL of the photos finished within 72 hours is rare. There is little doubt that the photographer will attempt to oblige your request; however in order to do so, they will need to push off other work. Pushing off other work comes at a premium and will be shown in your quote. For the most cost-effective quote, request the preliminary photos that you really do need almost immediately and (specify exactly what these photos have to contain) and enable 7-10 business days for the remainder of the photos to be delivered to you.

In summary, provide your photographer with as much detail at the first meeting as you possibly can, set clear expectations of your needs from the start, and always be honest with both your photographer and yourself. Follow these tips and you’ll be cutting those over-inflated photography quotes in no time.
