3 Tips For When You Ask For A Wedding Photography Proposal

So you’ve contacted a wedding photographer and they have offered you a quote for your wedding photographs that is within your budget. Congratulations! You should accept it immediately, right? WRONG! You most likely could have worked out a much better deal if you had actually read this article earlier.

The majority of people don’t understand exactly what a price quote really is on it’s most fundamental level. At the end of the day, this quote represents the amount of money the photographer is willing to exchange his/her time for. However, this quote represents more than the quantity you will have to pay for the photographer’s time. Keeping this in mind, how can you (as the client) bring down the stated quote so that it more properly represents your own idea of the value of the photographer’s time? Listed below are 3 considerations for you to keep in mind that may cause a photographer to inflate the value of their time, and therefore increase the asking amount from you for their services.

1) Lack of information
Professional photographers really can’t abide a lack of information when attempting to quote for a wedding. Generally, it is incredibly hard for photographers to get the appropriate level of detail when they are building their quote. This is usually due to the fact that customers supply the bare minimum of details when asking for a quote. Scenarios aside from the amount of time a photographer will be at the occasion matter greatly. For example, if your wedding will be spread throughout numerous rooms a photographer will probably require an assistant and your quote will reflect this added expense. On the other hand, if your wedding will be in a single room there might not be a requirement for the assistant. If the photographer does not have this information prior to releasing the quote, you can bet that the quote you receive shows the worst case scenario (i.e. the extra cost for the assistant’s salary, insurance coverage, etc.).

2) Be practical when estimating the number of hours you will require the photographer’s services
Most engaged couples overstate the amount of time they think that they’ll require a photographer to be at the wedding. Do you really need the photographer for the complete wedding reception? How many different angles do you really need of the same guests drinking cocktails and eating? An hour or 2 of unneeded photographer’s time can become rather expensive. Although, having said that, it is always much better to overestimate than underestimate the length of time you will need the photographer on-site. Giving accurate hours is the fastest method to cut unnecessary costs from your quote.

3) Be sincere about when you need the final images delivered
If you have elected photo enhancements, do not demand that the images be finished by the next business day. If you require a couple of initial photos for thank you cards, social media, etc. following the wedding, then ask for that at the time of booking the photographer – don’t make this request on the wedding day itself or, even worse, during the reception. The chances that you need ALL of the photos finished within 72 hours is unlikely. There is little doubt that the photographer will try to oblige your request; however in order to do so, they will have to push off other work. Pushing off work comes at a premium and will be reflected in your quote. For the best quote, ask for the initial photos that you really do need almost immediately and (specify exactly what these photos need to look like) and enable 7-10 business days for the remainder of the photographs to be delivered to you.

So to summarize, provide your photographer with as much information at the first meeting as you possibly can, set clear expectations of your needs from the onset, and always be sincere with both your photographer and yourself. Follow these suggestions and you’ll be bringing down those over-inflated photography quotes in no time.
