3 Helpful Tips When Asking For A Wedding Photography Quote

So you’ve contacted a wedding photographer and they have provided you a quote for your wedding photography that is within your budget. Congratulations! You should accept it immediately, right? WRONG! You most likely could have worked out a better deal if you had read this article before asking for the proposal.

Most people don’t comprehend what a price quote really is on it’s most basic level. At the end of the day, this quote represents the amount of money the photographer wants to exchange his/her time for. But, this quote represents more than the amount you will have to pay for the photographer’s time. Keeping this in mind, how can you (as the client) bring down the amount of the quote so that it more precisely represents your idea of the value of the photographer’s time? Listed below are 3 considerations for you to keep in mind that may encourage a photographer to inflate the value of their time, and therefore increase the asking amount from you for their services.

1) Missing information
Photographers really can’t abide missing information when attempting to quote for a wedding. Most of the time, it is extremely challenging for photographers to gather the proper level of info when they are building their quote. This is normally because clients offer the bare minimum of info when asking for a quote. Scenarios aside from the amount of time a photographer will be at the occasion matter greatly. For example, if your wedding will be spread throughout several rooms a photographer will likely need an assistant and your quote will show this added expense. On the other hand, if your wedding will remain in a single space there might not be a requirement for the assistant. If the photographer does not have this information prior to issuing the quote, you can guarantee that the quote you receive reflects the worst case circumstance (i.e. the extra cost for the assistant’s income, insurance, etc.).

2) Be reasonable when estimating the amount of time you will need coverage
Most individuals overstate the amount of time they think they need a photographer to be at the wedding. Do you truly require the photographer for all 3 hours of the wedding reception? How many angles do you actually require of the same people drinking cocktails and eating? An hour or 2 of unnecessary photographer’s time can become rather costly. Although, having said that, it is always better to overestimate than underestimate the amount of time you will need the photographer on-site. Giving accurate hours is the fastest method to cut unnecessary expenses from your quote.

3) Be honest about when you need the final photos delivered
If you have elected photo editing, don’t demand that the photographs be completed by the next business day. If you require a few preliminary photographs for thank you cards, Facebook, etc. immediately after the wedding, then ask for that at the time of booking the photographer – don’t make this request on the wedding day itself or, even worse, during the reception. The chances that you need ALL of the photos finished within 72 hours is rare. There is little doubt that the photographer will attempt to oblige your request; but in order to do so, they will need to push off other work. Pushing off other work comes at a premium and will be reflected in your quote. For the most cost-effective quote, ask for the preliminary images that you really do need straightaway and (be specific about what these photographs need to look like) and allow 7-10 business days for the rest of the images to be delivered to you.

So to summarize, provide your photographer with as much detail at the first meeting as you possibly can, set clear expectations of your needs from the onset, and always be sincere with both your photographer and yourself. Follow these tips and you’ll be slashing into those over-inflated photography quotes in no time.
