Three Helpful Tips For When You Ask For A Wedding Photography Quote

So you’ve contacted a wedding photographer and they have now given you a quote for your wedding photography that is within your spending limits. Congratulations! You should accept it right away, right? WRONG! You probably could have negotiated a much better price package if you had read this article earlier.

The majority of people don’t understand what an estimate really is on it’s most fundamental level. At the end of the day, this quote represents the amount of money the photographer is willing to exchange his/her time for. But, this quote represents more than the amount you will need to pay for the photographer’s time. Keeping this in mind, how can you (as the client) reduce the amount of the quote so that it more precisely represents your idea of the value of the photographer’s time? Below are 3 considerations for you to keep in mind that may cause a photographer to inflate the value of their time, and therefore increase the asking amount from you for their services.

1) Lack of information
Professional photographers really can’t abide missing information when trying to quote for a wedding. Most of the time, it is incredibly difficult for professional photographers to garner the proper level of detail when they are building their quote. This is normally because clients offer the bare minimum of information when asking for a quote. Circumstances other than the quantity of time a photographer will be at the occasion matter significantly. For example, if your wedding will be held throughout multiple rooms a photographer will likely need an assistant and your quote will show this extra expense. On the other hand, if your wedding will be in a single space there may not be a requirement for the assistant. If the photographer does not have this information prior to releasing the quote, you can bet that the quote you get shows the worst case situation (i.e. the extra expenditure for the assistant’s salary, insurance, etc.).

2) Be sensible when estimating the amount of time you will require the photographer’s services
Most people overestimate the length of time they think that they’ll need a photographer to be at the wedding. Do you actually require the photographer for the complete wedding reception? How many angles do you really require of the same people drinking cocktails and eating? An hour or more of unnecessary service can become quite costly. Although, having said that, it is always much better to overestimate than underestimate the amount of time you will need the photographer on-site. Giving accurate hours is the fastest method to cut unnecessary costs from your quote.

3) Be honest about when you require the finished photos delivered
If you have actually elected photo retouching, don’t demand that the photographs be completed by the next business day. If you need a couple of initial photographs for thank you cards, Facebook or Instagram, etc. after the wedding, then request that when you are booking the photographer – don’t make this request on the day of the wedding or, even worse, during the reception. The chances that you require ALL of the photos finished within 72 hours is rare. There is little doubt that the photographer will try to honor your demand; however in order to do so, they will have to push off other work. Pushing back work comes at a premium and will be shown in your quote. For the best quote, request the preliminary photos that you really do require straightaway and (be specific about exactly what these photographs need to look like) and allow 7-10 business days for the remainder of the photographs to be delivered to you.

So to summarize, provide your photographer with as much information at the first meeting as you possibly can, set clear expectations of your needs from the beginning, and always be truthful with both your photographer and yourself. Follow these pointers and you’ll be cutting those over-inflated photography quotes in no time.
