3 Helpful Hints For When You Ask For A Wedding Photography Proposal

So you’ve contacted a wedding photographer and they have now offered you a quote for your wedding photography that is within your budget. Congratulations! You should accept it straightaway, right? WRONG! You most likely could have worked out a much better price package if you had actually read this article before asking for the quote.

Most people don’t comprehend exactly what an estimate truly is on it’s most basic level. At the end of the day, this quote represents the target price the photographer is willing to exchange his/her time for. But, this quote represents more than the amount you will need to pay for the photographer’s time. Keeping this in mind, how can you (as the client) bring down the amount of the quote so that it more accurately represents your idea of the worth of the photographer’s time? Below are 3 considerations for you to keep in mind that may cause a photographer to push up the value of their time, and therefore increase the asking amount from you for their services.

1) Lack of information
Professional photographers really can’t abide a lack of information when trying to quote for a job. More often than not, it is very hard for professional photographers to garner the appropriate level of detail when they are constructing their quote. This is usually due to the fact that clients provide the bare minimum of details when requesting a quote. Circumstances other than the amount of time a photographer will be at the event matter considerably. For example, if your wedding will be held throughout multiple rooms a photographer will almost certainly require an assistant and your quote will reflect this added expense. On the other hand, if your wedding will be in a single space there may not be a need for the assistant. If the photographer does not have this information prior to releasing the quote, you can bet that the quote you get shows the worst case situation (i.e. the extra expenditure for the assistant’s wage, insurance, and so on).

2) Be sensible when estimating the number of hours you will require the photographer’s services
Most individuals overestimate the amount of time they think they need a photographer to be at the wedding. Do you really require the photographer for all 5 hours of the wedding reception? How many angles do you really require of the same people drinking champagne and eating? An hour or two of unnecessary service can become rather expensive. Although, having said that, it is always much better to overestimate than underestimate the length of time you will need the photographer on-site. Giving accurate hours is the fastest way to cut unneeded expenses from your quote.

3) Be honest about when you require the finished images delivered
If you have chosen photo enhancements, do not request that the photographs be done by the next business day. If you need a few preliminary photos for thank you cards, Facebook, etc. immediately after the wedding, then request for that when you are booking the photographer – don’t make this request on the wedding day itself or, even worse, during the reception. The chances that you need ALL of the photos finished within 72 hours is rare. There is little doubt that the photographer will attempt to honor your demand; but in order to do so, they will have to push off other work. Pushing back other work comes at a premium and will be reflected in your quote. For the most cost-effective quote, request the initial images that you really do require almost immediately and (specify what these photos have to look like) and allow 7-10 business days for the remainder of the images to be delivered.

In summary, provide your photographer with as much detail at the first meeting as you possibly can, set clear expectations of your needs from the start, and always be honest with both your photographer and yourself. Follow these pointers and you’ll be bringing down those over-inflated photography quotes in no time.
