3 Helpful Hints When Asking For A Wedding Photography Proposal

So you’ve been in touch with a wedding photographer and they have provided you a quote for your wedding photographs that is within your budget. Congratulations! You should accept it immediately, right? WRONG! You probably could have negotiated a much better deal if you had read this article before asking for the quote.

Most people don’t understand exactly what a price quote really is on it’s most basic level. At the end of the day, this quote represents the target price the photographer is willing to exchange his/her efforts for. But, this quote represents more than the amount you will need to pay for the photographer’s time. Keeping this in mind, how can you (as the customer) bring down the amount of the quote so that it more accurately represents your idea of the value of the photographer’s time? Below are 3 considerations for you to keep in mind that may encourage a photographer to push up the value of their time, and therefore increase the asking amount from you for their services.

1) Lack of details
Photographers really can’t abide missing information when trying to quote for a job. Generally, it is exceptionally difficult for professional photographers to get the appropriate level of detail when they are building their quote. This is typically because customers provide the bare minimum of info when asking for a quote. Situations aside from the quantity of time a photographer will be at the event matter significantly. For example, if your wedding will be spread throughout numerous rooms a photographer will likely need an assistant and your quote will show this extra expense. On the other hand, if your wedding will remain in a single space there might not be a requirement for the assistant. If the photographer does not have this information prior to issuing the quote, you can bet that the quote you receive shows the worst case situation (i.e. the extra expenditure for the assistant’s salary, insurance coverage, etc.).

2) Be reasonable when estimating the number of hours you will need the photographer’s services
Most people overstate the amount of time they think they require a photographer to be at the wedding. Do you really require the photographer for all 5 hours of the wedding reception? How many different angles do you really need of the same guests drinking cocktails and eating? An hour or more of unneeded service can end up being rather expensive. Although, having said that, it is always much better to overestimate than underestimate the length of time you will require the photographer on-site. Giving accurate hours is the fastest method to remove unnecessary costs from your quote.

3) Be sincere about when you need the final photos delivered
If you have elected photo retouching, do not request that the images be delivered by the next business day. If you require a couple of initial images for thank you cards, social media, etc. immediately after the wedding, then request that at the time of booking the photographer – don’t make this request on the day of the wedding or, even worse, during the reception. The chances that you require ALL of the photos finished within 72 hours is unusual. There is little doubt that the photographer will try to honor your demand; but in order to do so, they will need to push off other work. Pushing back work comes at a premium and will be reflected in your quote. For the best quote, ask for the preliminary photographs that you really do need straightaway and (specify what these images have to look like) and allow 7-10 business days for the remainder of the images to be delivered to you.

In summary, provide your photographer with as much information when you first meet with the him/her as you possibly can, set clear expectations of your needs from the beginning, and always be truthful with both your photographer and yourself. Follow these tips and you’ll be slashing into those over-inflated photography quotes in no time.
