3 Tips For When You Ask For A Wedding Photography Proposal

So you’ve been in touch with a wedding photographer and they have provided you a quote for your wedding photographs that is within your budget. Congratulations! You should accept it straightaway, right? WRONG! You probably could have negotiated a better deal if you had actually read this article earlier.

The majority of people do not comprehend what a price quote truly is on it’s most basic level. At the end of the day, this quote represents the target price the photographer is willing to exchange his/her time for. However, this quote represents more than the quantity you will have to pay for the photographer’s time. Keeping this in mind, how can you (as the customer) reduce the amount of the quote so that it more accurately represents your own idea of the value of the photographer’s time? Listed below are 3 considerations for you to keep in mind that may cause a photographer to inflate the value of their time, and therefore increase the asking amount from you for their services.

1) Lack of information
Professional photographers really can’t abide a lack of information when trying to quote for a job. Typically, it is exceptionally tough for photographers to get the correct level of information when they are constructing their quote. This is usually because customers provide the bare minimum of details when asking for a quote. Situations other than the quantity of time a photographer will be at the event matter greatly. For example, if your wedding will be held throughout multiple rooms a photographer will probably require an assistant and your quote will show this extra expense. On the other hand, if your wedding will be in a single space there may not be a requirement for the assistant. If the photographer does not have this information prior to providing the quote, you can guarantee that the quote you get reflects the worst case situation (i.e. the additional expense for the assistant’s income, insurance, etc.).

2) Be practical when giving the amount of time you will require the photographer’s services
Most engaged couples overestimate the length of time they think that they’ll need a photographer to be at the wedding. Do you actually require the photographer for all 3 hours of the wedding reception? How many different angles do you truly require of the same guests drinking champagne and eating? An hour or 2 of unnecessary service can become quite costly. Although, having said that, it is always better to overestimate than underestimate the length of time you will need the photographer on-site. Giving accurate hours is the fastest method to cut unneeded expenses from your quote.

3) Be sincere about when you need the finished images delivered
If you have elected photo editing, do not demand that the photos be done by the next business day. If you need a few preliminary images for thank you cards, Instagram, etc. following the wedding, then request that at the time of booking the photographer – don’t make this request on the day of the wedding or, even worse, during the reception. The chances that you need ALL of the photos finished within 72 hours is unusual. There is little doubt that the photographer will attempt to honor your request; however in order to do so, they will have to push off other work. Pushing off other work comes at a premium and will be reflected in your quote. For the most cost-effective quote, ask for the preliminary photos that you really do need straightaway and (be specific about exactly what these images need to look like) and allow 7-10 business days for the remainder of the images to be delivered.

So to summarize, provide your photographer with as much detail at the first meeting as you possibly can, set clear expectations of your needs from the onset, and always be truthful with both your photographer and yourself. Follow these tips and you’ll be slashing into those over-inflated photography quotes in no time.
