3 Helpful Hints When Asking For A Wedding Photography Proposal

So you’ve called a wedding photographer and they have now provided you a quote for your wedding photography that is within your spending limits. Congratulations! You should accept it straightaway, right? WRONG! You probably could have negotiated a much better deal if you had actually read this article before asking for the proposal.

Most people do not comprehend what a price quote really is on it’s most fundamental level. At the end of the day, this quote represents the target price the photographer wants to exchange his/her efforts for. But, this quote represents more than the quantity you will need to pay out for the photographer’s time. Keeping this in mind, how can you (as the client) reduce the stated quote so that it more accurately represents your own idea of the value of the photographer’s time? Below are 3 considerations for you to keep in mind that may encourage a photographer to inflate the value of their time, and therefore increase the asking amount from you for their services.

1) Missing information
Photographers HATE missing information when trying to quote for a job. More often than not, it is exceptionally difficult for professional photographers to gather the proper level of detail when they are developing their quote. This is normally due to the fact that customers supply the bare minimum of info when requesting a quote. Scenarios other than the amount of time a photographer will be at the occasion matter significantly. For example, if your wedding will be held throughout multiple rooms a photographer will almost certainly need an assistant and your quote will reflect this extra expense. On the other hand, if your wedding will be in a single room there may not be a requirement for the assistant. If the photographer does not have this information prior to providing the quote, you can guarantee that the quote you receive reflects the worst case scenario (i.e. the additional cost for the assistant’s salary, insurance, etc.).

2) Be reasonable when estimating the amount of time you will require coverage
Most engaged couples overstate the length of time they think that they’ll require a photographer to be at the wedding. Do you actually need the photographer for all 4 hours of the wedding reception? How many angles do you actually need of the same people drinking champagne and eating? An hour or more of unnecessary service can become rather costly. Although, having said that, it is always much better to overestimate than underestimate the amount of time you will require the photographer on-site. Giving accurate hours is the fastest method to cut unneeded expenses from your quote.

3) Be truthful about when you require the finished photos delivered
If you have actually elected photo editing, do not demand that the photographs be delivered by the next business day. If you need a couple of initial photographs for thank you cards, social media, etc. after the wedding, then ask for that when you are booking the photographer – don’t make this request on the day of the wedding or, even worse, during the reception. The chances that you require ALL of the photos finished within 72 hours is unusual. There is little doubt that the photographer will try to oblige your request; but in order to do so, they will have to push off other work. Pushing off other work comes at a premium and will be reflected in your quote. For the best quote, ask for the preliminary images that you really do need almost immediately and (specify exactly what these photographs need to look like) and allow 7-10 business days for the rest of the photos to be delivered to you.

In summary, supply your photographer with as much detail at the first meeting as you possibly can, set clear expectations of your needs from the beginning, and always be truthful with both your photographer and yourself. Follow these tips and you’ll be cutting those over-inflated photography quotes in no time.
