Three Tips When Asking For A Wedding Photography Proposal

So you’ve been in touch with a wedding photographer and they have provided you a quote for your wedding photographs that is within your spending limits. Congratulations! You should accept it immediately, right? DEFINITELY NOT! You most likely could have negotiated a much better deal if you had actually read this article earlier.

Most people do not comprehend what a price quote truly is on it’s most fundamental level. At the end of the day, this quote represents the amount of money the photographer is willing to exchange his/her time for. But, this quote represents more than the quantity you will have to pay out for the photographer’s time. Keeping this in mind, how can you (as the client) bring down the stated quote so that it more properly represents your own idea of the worth of the photographer’s time? Listed below are 3 considerations for you to keep in mind that may cause a photographer to inflate the value of their time, and therefore increase the asking amount from you for their services.

1) Lack of information
Photographers HATE a lack of information when trying to quote for a wedding. Generally, it is very difficult for professional photographers to get the appropriate level of info when they are constructing their quote. This is normally due to the fact that clients provide the bare minimum of information when asking for a quote. Circumstances other than the amount of time a photographer will be at the event matter greatly. For example, if your wedding will be held throughout multiple rooms a photographer will probably require an assistant and your quote will show this added expense. On the other hand, if your wedding will be in a single space there may not be a need for the assistant. If the photographer does not have this information prior to issuing the quote, you can guarantee that the quote you get shows the worst case circumstance (i.e. the additional cost for the assistant’s wage, insurance, etc.).

2) Be sensible when giving the amount of time you will require the photographer’s services
Most people overstate the length of time they think that they’ll require a photographer to be at the wedding. Do you really require the photographer for the complete wedding reception? How many angles do you truly require of the same guests drinking cocktails and eating? An hour or more of unneeded service can become quite expensive. Although, having said that, it is always better to overestimate than underestimate the amount of time you will need the photographer on-site. Giving accurate hours is the fastest method to remove unnecessary costs from your quote.

3) Be honest about when you need the finished photos delivered
If you have chosen photo retouching, don’t demand that the photographs be completed by the next business day. If you need a few initial images for thank you cards, Facebook or Instagram, etc. immediately after the wedding, then request that at the time of booking the photographer – don’t make this request on the wedding day itself or, even worse, during the reception. The chances that you require ALL of the photos finished within 72 hours is unlikely. There is little doubt that the photographer will attempt to oblige your request; but in order to do so, they will need to push off other work. Pushing back work comes at a premium and will be reflected in your quote. For the most cost-effective quote, ask for the initial photographs that you really do require almost immediately and (specify what these images need to contain) and allow 7-10 business days for the remainder of the photographs to be delivered to you.

So to summarize, supply your photographer with as much information when you first meet with the him/her as you possibly can, set clear expectations of your needs from the onset, and always be honest with both your photographer and yourself. Follow these pointers and you’ll be cutting those over-inflated photography quotes in no time.
