Three Helpful Hints For When You Ask For A Wedding Photography Quote

So you’ve called a wedding photographer and they have given you a quote for your wedding photography that is within your spending limits. Congratulations! You should accept it right away, right? DEFINITELY NOT! You most likely could have worked out a better price package if you had actually read this article earlier.

Most people do not understand exactly what an estimate really is on it’s most basic level. At the end of the day, this quote represents the target price the photographer wants to exchange his/her time for. However, this quote represents more than the amount you will have to pay out for the photographer’s time. Keeping this in mind, how can you (as the customer) reduce the stated quote so that it more precisely represents your own idea of the value of the photographer’s time? Below are 3 considerations for you to keep in mind that may cause a photographer to increase the value of their time, and therefore increase the asking amount from you for their services.

1) Lack of details
Professional photographers really can’t abide missing information when attempting to quote for a job. Usually, it is exceptionally hard for photographers to garner the proper level of info when they are developing their quote. This is normally because clients offer the bare minimum of details when asking for a quote. Situations other than the amount of time a photographer will be at the event matter considerably. For example, if your wedding will be held throughout multiple rooms a photographer will likely need an assistant and your quote will show this extra expense. On the other hand, if your wedding will remain in a single room there might not be a need for the assistant. If the photographer does not have this information prior to issuing the quote, you can guarantee that the quote you get shows the worst case circumstance (i.e. the extra cost for the assistant’s income, insurance, and so on).

2) Be realistic when giving the amount of time you will need coverage
Most people overstate the amount of time they think they require a photographer to be at the wedding. Do you truly require the photographer for all 3 hours of the wedding reception? How many angles do you actually require of the same people drinking cocktails and eating? An hour or two of unnecessary photographer’s time can become rather costly. Although, having said that, it is always better to overestimate than underestimate the amount of time you will require the photographer on-site. Giving accurate hours is the fastest way to cut unnecessary expenses from your quote.

3) Be sincere about when you require the final photographs delivered
If you have chosen photo enhancements, don’t request that the photographs be done by the next business day. If you need a couple of preliminary images for thank you cards, social media, etc. immediately after the wedding, then request that when you are booking the photographer – don’t make this request on the wedding day itself or, even worse, during the reception. The chances that you need ALL of the photos finished within 72 hours is unusual. There is little doubt that the photographer will try to honor your request; but in order to do so, they will need to push off other work. Pushing back work comes at a premium and will be reflected in your quote. For the best quote, request the initial photographs that you really do require almost immediately and (specify what these photographs have to look like) and allow 7-10 business days for the rest of the photos to be delivered to you.

So to summarize, provide your photographer with as much information at the first meeting as you possibly can, set clear expectations of your needs from the start, and always be sincere with both your photographer and yourself. Follow these pointers and you’ll be cutting those over-inflated photography quotes in no time.
