3 Tips For When You Ask For A Wedding Photography Proposal

So you’ve called a wedding photographer and they have offered you a quote for your wedding photographs that is within your spending limits. Congratulations! You should accept it right away, right? WRONG! You probably could have negotiated a much better deal if you had read this short article before asking for the quote.

Most people do not understand exactly what an estimate truly is on it’s most basic level. At the end of the day, this quote represents the amount of money the photographer wants to exchange his/her time for. But, this quote represents more than the quantity you will need to pay for the photographer’s time. Keeping this in mind, how can you (as the client) bring down the amount of the quote so that it more precisely represents your own idea of the worth of the photographer’s time? Listed below are 3 considerations for you to keep in mind that may encourage a photographer to increase the value of their time, and therefore increase the asking amount from you for their services.

1) Lack of details
Photographers HATE a lack of information when trying to quote for a wedding. Most of the time, it is incredibly difficult for photographers to garner the correct level of detail when they are building their quote. This is usually because clients provide the bare minimum of info when asking for a quote. Circumstances aside from the amount of time a photographer will be at the event matter considerably. For example, if your wedding will be spread throughout several rooms a photographer will almost certainly need an assistant and your quote will reflect this added expense. On the other hand, if your wedding will be in a single space there might not be a requirement for the assistant. If the photographer does not have this information prior to issuing the quote, you can bet that the quote you receive shows the worst case circumstance (i.e. the additional expenditure for the assistant’s salary, insurance, and so on).

2) Be sensible when estimating the number of hours you will need the photographer’s services
Most people overstate the amount of time they think they require a photographer to be at the wedding. Do you truly require the photographer for the complete wedding reception? How many different angles do you actually need of the same people drinking champagne and eating? An hour or two of unnecessary service can become quite costly. Although, having said that, it is always much better to overestimate than underestimate the length of time you will require the photographer on-site. Giving accurate hours is the fastest way to cut unnecessary expenses from your quote.

3) Be truthful about when you require the finished images delivered
If you have chosen photo retouching, don’t demand that the photographs be done by the next business day. If you need a few preliminary images for thank you cards, social media, etc. immediately after the wedding, then ask for that when you are booking the photographer – don’t make this request on the wedding day itself or, even worse, during the reception. The chances that you require ALL of the photos finished within 72 hours is rare. There is little doubt that the photographer will attempt to oblige your demand; but in order to do so, they will have to push off other work. Pushing back work comes at a premium and will be shown in your quote. For the best quote, request the preliminary photographs that you really do need straightaway and (specify exactly what these photographs need to look like) and allow 7-10 business days for the rest of the images to be delivered to you.

In summary, provide your photographer with as much information when you first meet with the him/her as you possibly can, set clear expectations of your needs from the onset, and always be sincere with both your photographer and yourself. Follow these pointers and you’ll be slashing into those over-inflated photography quotes in no time.
