Three Helpful Hints When Asking For A Wedding Photography Proposal

So you’ve contacted a wedding photographer and they have now given you a quote for your wedding photographs that is within your spending limits. Congratulations! You should accept it straightaway, right? WRONG! You probably could have worked out a better deal if you had read this short article earlier.

Most people don’t understand exactly what a price quote truly is on it’s most basic level. At the end of the day, this quote represents the target price the photographer wants to exchange his/her efforts for. However, this quote represents more than the amount you will need to pay for the photographer’s time. Keeping this in mind, how can you (as the client) bring down the amount of the quote so that it more precisely represents your idea of the value of the photographer’s time? Listed below are 3 considerations for you to keep in mind that may encourage a photographer to increase the value of their time, and therefore increase the asking amount from you for their services.

1) Lack of information
Photographers HATE a lack of information when attempting to quote for a job. More often than not, it is very challenging for photographers to gather the appropriate level of info when they are building their quote. This is generally because customers offer the bare minimum of info when asking for a quote. Circumstances besides the amount of time a photographer will be at the occasion matter significantly. For example, if your wedding will be spread throughout multiple rooms a photographer will probably need an assistant and your quote will show this added expense. On the other hand, if your wedding will remain in a single room there might not be a need for the assistant. If the photographer does not have this information prior to providing the quote, you can guarantee that the quote you get reflects the worst case scenario (i.e. the additional expense for the assistant’s income, insurance, etc.).

2) Be sensible when giving the number of hours you will require the photographer’s services
Most people overstate the amount of time they think that they’ll need a photographer to be at the wedding. Do you really require the photographer for the complete wedding reception? How many different angles do you really require of the same people drinking champagne and eating? An hour or 2 of unnecessary photographer’s time can become rather costly. Although, having said that, it is always much better to overestimate than underestimate the amount of time you will require the photographer on-site. Giving accurate hours is the fastest way to remove unnecessary expenses from your quote.

3) Be truthful about when you need the final images delivered
If you have chosen photo enhancements, don’t demand that the photos be delivered by the next business day. If you need a few initial photos for thank you cards, Facebook or Instagram, etc. immediately after the wedding, then request that at the time of booking the photographer – don’t make this request on the day of the wedding or, even worse, during the reception. The chances that you need ALL of the photos finished within 72 hours is unlikely. There is little doubt that the photographer will attempt to honor your demand; but in order to do so, they will need to push off other work. Pushing off work comes at a premium and will be shown in your quote. For the most cost-effective quote, ask for the initial photographs that you really do need straightaway and (be specific about exactly what these photos need to contain) and permit 7-10 business days for the rest of the photographs to be delivered.

So to summarize, provide your photographer with as much detail when you first meet with the him/her as you possibly can, set clear expectations of your needs from the onset, and always be honest with both your photographer and yourself. Follow these pointers and you’ll be cutting those over-inflated photography quotes in no time.
