3 Helpful Hints For When You Ask For A Wedding Photography Quote

So you’ve contacted a wedding photographer and they have now offered you a quote for your wedding photography that is within your budget. Congratulations! You should accept it immediately, right? WRONG! You probably could have negotiated a much better price package if you had read this short article earlier.

Most people don’t understand what a price quote really is on it’s most basic level. At the end of the day, this quote represents the target price the photographer wants to exchange his/her time for. However, this quote represents more than the amount you will have to pay out for the photographer’s time. Keeping this in mind, how can you (as the client) bring down the stated quote so that it more accurately represents your own idea of the worth of the photographer’s time? Listed below are 3 considerations for you to keep in mind that may cause a photographer to increase the value of their time, and therefore increase the asking amount from you for their services.

1) Lack of details
Photographers really can’t abide a lack of information when attempting to quote for a job. Typically, it is incredibly difficult for photographers to garner the appropriate level of information when they are building their quote. This is generally because clients provide the bare minimum of info when asking for a quote. Circumstances aside from the amount of time a photographer will be at the event matter greatly. For example, if your wedding will be spread throughout several rooms a photographer will likely need an assistant and your quote will show this extra expense. On the other hand, if your wedding will remain in a single space there might not be a requirement for the assistant. If the photographer does not have this information prior to issuing the quote, you can bet that the quote you get shows the worst case scenario (i.e. the additional expenditure for the assistant’s wage, insurance coverage, and so on).

2) Be practical when estimating the amount of time you will require the photographer’s services
Most engaged couples overestimate the amount of time they think they require a photographer to be at the wedding. Do you really require the photographer for all 5 hours of the wedding reception? How many angles do you actually need of the same guests drinking cocktails and eating? An hour or more of unneeded service can become rather costly. Although, having said that, it is always much better to overestimate than underestimate the amount of time you will need the photographer on-site. Giving accurate hours is the fastest method to remove unneeded costs from your quote.

3) Be honest about when you need the final images delivered
If you have elected photo enhancements, do not request that the photos be delivered by the next business day. If you require a couple of initial photographs for thank you cards, Facebook, etc. after the wedding, then request for that when you are booking the photographer – don’t make this request on the wedding day itself or, even worse, during the reception. The chances that you require ALL of the photos finished within 72 hours is unlikely. There is little doubt that the photographer will try to honor your demand; however in order to do so, they will need to push off other work. Pushing off work comes at a premium and will be reflected in your quote. For the best quote, request the initial images that you really do need almost immediately and (be specific about exactly what these photographs need to look like) and allow 7-10 business days for the rest of the photographs to be delivered to you.

In summary, supply your photographer with as much information when you first meet with the him/her as you possibly can, set clear expectations of your needs from the onset, and always be sincere with both your photographer and yourself. Follow these tips and you’ll be bringing down those over-inflated photography quotes in no time.
