Three Tips When Asking For A Wedding Photography Proposal

So you’ve been in touch with a wedding photographer and they have offered you a quote for your wedding photographs that is within your budget. Congratulations! You should accept it right away, right? WRONG! You most likely could have worked out a much better deal if you had read this article before asking for the quote.

Most people do not comprehend exactly what a price quote truly is on it’s most basic level. At the end of the day, this quote represents the amount of money the photographer wants to exchange his/her efforts for. But, this quote represents more than the amount you will have to pay for the photographer’s time. Keeping this in mind, how can you (as the customer) reduce the stated quote so that it more precisely represents your own idea of the worth of the photographer’s time? Below are 3 considerations for you to keep in mind that may cause a photographer to increase the value of their time, and therefore increase the asking amount from you for their services.

1) Missing details
Professional photographers HATE missing information when trying to quote for a wedding. More often than not, it is very hard for photographers to garner the correct level of detail when they are building their quote. This is usually due to the fact that customers provide the bare minimum of info when requesting a quote. Situations aside from the quantity of time a photographer will be at the event matter considerably. For instance, if your wedding will be spread throughout several rooms a photographer will almost certainly require an assistant and your quote will show this added expense. On the other hand, if your wedding will remain in a single space there may not be a requirement for the assistant. If the photographer does not have this information prior to releasing the quote, you can guarantee that the quote you receive reflects the worst case circumstance (i.e. the extra expense for the assistant’s wage, insurance, etc.).

2) Be reasonable when estimating the number of hours you will need coverage
Most engaged couples overstate the length of time they think that they’ll need a photographer to be at the wedding. Do you really require the photographer for all 5 hours of the wedding reception? How many angles do you truly require of the same people drinking champagne and eating? An hour or 2 of unnecessary photographer’s time can become quite costly. Although, having said that, it is always much better to overestimate than underestimate the length of time you will need the photographer on-site. Giving accurate hours is the fastest way to remove unneeded costs from your quote.

3) Be sincere about when you require the finished images delivered
If you have chosen photo retouching, don’t demand that the photographs be done by the next business day. If you need a couple of initial photos for thank you cards, Facebook, etc. following the wedding, then ask for that when you are booking the photographer – don’t make this request on the wedding day itself or, even worse, during the reception. The chances that you need ALL of the photos finished within 72 hours is rare. There is little doubt that the photographer will attempt to honor your request; but in order to do so, they will need to push off other work. Pushing off work comes at a premium and will be shown in your quote. For the best quote, ask for the preliminary photographs that you really do require straightaway and (be specific about what these photographs have to contain) and enable 7-10 business days for the remainder of the photographs to be delivered.

So to summarize, supply your photographer with as much information when you first meet with the him/her as you possibly can, set clear expectations of your needs from the onset, and always be truthful with both your photographer and yourself. Follow these pointers and you’ll be slashing into those over-inflated photography quotes in no time.
