3 Tips When Asking For A Wedding Photography Proposal

So you’ve contacted a wedding photographer and they have now provided you a quote for your wedding photography that is within your budget. Congratulations! You should accept it right away, right? WRONG! You most likely could have negotiated a better price package if you had read this article earlier.

The majority of people don’t understand what a price quote actually is on it’s most fundamental level. At the end of the day, this quote represents the target price the photographer wants to exchange his/her time for. But, this quote represents more than the quantity you will need to pay for the photographer’s time. Keeping this in mind, how can you (as the client) bring down the stated quote so that it more properly represents your idea of the value of the photographer’s time? Listed below are 3 considerations for you to keep in mind that may encourage a photographer to inflate the value of their time, and therefore increase the asking amount from you for their services.

1) Lack of information
Professional photographers HATE missing information when trying to quote for a job. Most of the time, it is incredibly tough for professional photographers to gather the appropriate level of information when they are developing their quote. This is usually because customers offer the bare minimum of info when requesting a quote. Situations other than the amount of time a photographer will be at the event matter significantly. For example, if your wedding will be spread throughout several rooms a photographer will likely require an assistant and your quote will show this extra expense. On the other hand, if your wedding will be in a single space there may not be a requirement for the assistant. If the photographer does not have this information prior to providing the quote, you can bet that the quote you receive reflects the worst case situation (i.e. the additional cost for the assistant’s income, insurance coverage, and so on).

2) Be realistic when giving the amount of time you will need the photographer’s services
Most individuals overstate the length of time they think that they’ll require a photographer to be at the wedding. Do you truly need the photographer for the complete wedding reception? How many angles do you really need of the same people drinking cocktails and eating? An hour or more of unnecessary service can become quite costly. Although, having said that, it is always much better to overestimate than underestimate the length of time you will require the photographer on-site. Giving accurate hours is the fastest way to remove unneeded expenses from your quote.

3) Be honest about when you need the completed photos delivered
If you have actually elected photo enhancements, do not request that the photographs be done by the next business day. If you require a few preliminary photographs for thank you cards, Facebook, etc. after the wedding, then request for that when you are booking the photographer – don’t make this request on the day of the wedding or, even worse, during the reception. The chances that you require ALL of the photos finished within 72 hours is unlikely. There is little doubt that the photographer will attempt to oblige your demand; however in order to do so, they will have to push off other work. Pushing back work comes at a premium and will be shown in your quote. For the best quote, request the preliminary images that you really do require almost immediately and (specify exactly what these images need to look like) and enable 7-10 business days for the rest of the images to be delivered.

In summary, provide your photographer with as much information at the first meeting as you possibly can, set clear expectations of your needs from the onset, and always be honest with both your photographer and yourself. Follow these pointers and you’ll be bringing down those over-inflated photography quotes in no time.
