Three Tips When Asking For A Wedding Photography Proposal

So you’ve been in touch with a wedding photographer and they have provided you a quote for your wedding photography that is within your spending limits. Congratulations! You should accept it straightaway, right? DEFINITELY NOT! You probably could have negotiated a better deal if you had read this short article earlier.

Most people do not comprehend what an estimate truly is on it’s most fundamental level. At the end of the day, this quote represents the amount of money the photographer is willing to exchange his/her time for. However, this quote represents more than the amount you will have to pay for the photographer’s time. Keeping this in mind, how can you (as the client) reduce the stated quote so that it more precisely represents your own idea of the value of the photographer’s time? Listed below are 3 considerations for you to keep in mind that may encourage a photographer to inflate the value of their time, and therefore increase the asking amount from you for their services.

1) Missing details
Photographers HATE missing information when trying to quote for a job. Usually, it is extremely difficult for photographers to get the correct level of info when they are constructing their quote. This is generally because customers offer the bare minimum of details when requesting a quote. Situations other than the quantity of time a photographer will be at the event matter greatly. For instance, if your wedding will be held throughout numerous rooms a photographer will almost certainly require an assistant and your quote will show this extra expense. On the other hand, if your wedding will remain in a single space there might not be a need for the assistant. If the photographer does not have this information prior to releasing the quote, you can bet that the quote you get shows the worst case circumstance (i.e. the extra expenditure for the assistant’s wage, insurance, and so on).

2) Be practical when estimating the amount of time you will need the photographer’s services
Most engaged couples overestimate the length of time they think they require a photographer to be at the wedding. Do you really need the photographer for the complete wedding reception? How many angles do you actually require of the same guests drinking champagne and eating? An hour or more of unnecessary photographer’s time can become rather expensive. Although, having said that, it is always much better to overestimate than underestimate the length of time you will require the photographer on-site. Giving accurate hours is the fastest way to cut unnecessary costs from your quote.

3) Be honest about when you need the final photographs delivered
If you have elected photo retouching, don’t request that the photographs be completed by the next business day. If you need a few preliminary images for thank you cards, social media, etc. after the wedding, then ask for that at the time of booking the photographer – don’t make this request on the wedding day itself or, even worse, during the reception. The chances that you need ALL of the photos finished within 72 hours is unusual. There is little doubt that the photographer will try to honor your request; but in order to do so, they will have to push off other work. Pushing back other work comes at a premium and will be shown in your quote. For the most cost-effective quote, request the preliminary photographs that you really do require almost immediately and (be specific about exactly what these photographs have to contain) and permit 7-10 business days for the remainder of the photos to be delivered to you.

So to summarize, provide your photographer with as much detail at the first meeting as you possibly can, set clear expectations of your needs from the onset, and always be sincere with both your photographer and yourself. Follow these tips and you’ll be cutting those over-inflated photography quotes in no time.
