Three Helpful Hints For When You Ask For A Wedding Photography Quote

So you’ve called a wedding photographer and they have provided you a quote for your wedding photography that is within your budget. Congratulations! You should accept it right away, right? DEFINITELY NOT! You probably could have worked out a much better deal if you had read this article earlier.

Most people don’t understand exactly what an estimate really is on it’s most fundamental level. At the end of the day, this quote represents the amount of money the photographer is willing to exchange his/her efforts for. However, this quote represents more than the quantity you will need to pay for the photographer’s time. Keeping this in mind, how can you (as the client) bring down the stated quote so that it more accurately represents your own idea of the value of the photographer’s time? Below are 3 considerations for you to keep in mind that may cause a photographer to push up the value of their time, and therefore increase the asking amount from you for their services.

1) Lack of details
Photographers HATE a lack of information when trying to quote for a wedding. Typically, it is incredibly difficult for professional photographers to garner the appropriate level of information when they are building their quote. This is usually due to the fact that clients provide the bare minimum of info when asking for a quote. Scenarios aside from the quantity of time a photographer will be at the occasion matter greatly. For example, if your wedding will be held throughout multiple rooms a photographer will likely need an assistant and your quote will show this extra expense. On the other hand, if your wedding will remain in a single space there might not be a requirement for the assistant. If the photographer does not have this information prior to issuing the quote, you can bet that the quote you get reflects the worst case situation (i.e. the extra expense for the assistant’s wage, insurance, and so on).

2) Be reasonable when estimating the number of hours you will require coverage
Most individuals overstate the length of time they think they require a photographer to be at the wedding. Do you really require the photographer for all 4 hours of the wedding reception? How many angles do you truly need of the same guests drinking champagne and eating? An hour or two of unnecessary photographer’s time can become rather costly. Although, having said that, it is always better to overestimate than underestimate the length of time you will need the photographer on-site. Giving accurate hours is the fastest way to remove unneeded expenses from your quote.

3) Be sincere about when you require the finished images delivered
If you have chosen photo enhancements, do not demand that the images be delivered by the next business day. If you require a few preliminary images for thank you cards, Instagram, etc. after the wedding, then request that when you are booking the photographer – don’t make this request on the wedding day itself or, even worse, during the reception. The chances that you need ALL of the photos finished within 72 hours is unlikely. There is little doubt that the photographer will try to honor your demand; but in order to do so, they will have to push off other work. Pushing off other work comes at a premium and will be shown in your quote. For the best quote, ask for the preliminary images that you really do need almost immediately and (be specific about what these photographs need to contain) and allow 7-10 business days for the remainder of the photos to be delivered to you.

In summary, provide your photographer with as much detail when you first meet with the him/her as you possibly can, set clear expectations of your needs from the onset, and always be truthful with both your photographer and yourself. Follow these suggestions and you’ll be bringing down those over-inflated photography quotes in no time.
