3 Helpful Hints When Asking For A Wedding Photography Proposal

So you’ve contacted a wedding photographer and they have given you a quote for your wedding photographs that is within your spending limits. Congratulations! You should accept it straightaway, right? WRONG! You probably could have negotiated a better deal if you had read this short article before asking for the proposal.

Most people do not understand exactly what a price quote really is on it’s most fundamental level. At the end of the day, this quote represents the target price the photographer is willing to exchange his/her time for. But, this quote represents more than the amount you will have to pay for the photographer’s time. Keeping this in mind, how can you (as the client) reduce the stated quote so that it more properly represents your idea of the value of the photographer’s time? Listed below are 3 considerations for you to keep in mind that may cause a photographer to push up the value of their time, and therefore increase the asking amount from you for their services.

1) Missing information
Professional photographers HATE missing information when attempting to quote for a job. Typically, it is very challenging for professional photographers to get the appropriate level of info when they are constructing their quote. This is usually due to the fact that clients offer the bare minimum of information when requesting a quote. Circumstances other than the amount of time a photographer will be at the occasion matter considerably. For instance, if your wedding will be held throughout multiple rooms a photographer will probably require an assistant and your quote will show this added expense. On the other hand, if your wedding will remain in a single space there might not be a requirement for the assistant. If the photographer does not have this information prior to issuing the quote, you can guarantee that the quote you receive reflects the worst case circumstance (i.e. the additional expenditure for the assistant’s salary, insurance coverage, etc.).

2) Be realistic when giving the amount of time you will require coverage
Most people overstate the length of time they think they need a photographer to be at the wedding. Do you truly need the photographer for the complete wedding reception? How many angles do you really need of the same people drinking cocktails and eating? An hour or two of unneeded photographer’s time can end up being quite expensive. Although, having said that, it is always much better to overestimate than underestimate the amount of time you will need the photographer on-site. Giving accurate hours is the fastest method to remove unnecessary expenses from your quote.

3) Be honest about when you require the completed photographs delivered
If you have elected photo retouching, do not request that the images be completed by the next business day. If you require a couple of initial images for thank you cards, social media, etc. after the wedding, then request that when you are booking the photographer – don’t make this request on the wedding day itself or, even worse, during the reception. The chances that you need ALL of the photos finished within 72 hours is unlikely. There is little doubt that the photographer will attempt to honor your demand; but in order to do so, they will need to push off other work. Pushing back work comes at a premium and will be shown in your quote. For the best quote, ask for the preliminary photographs that you really do need almost immediately and (be specific about what these photographs need to contain) and enable 7-10 business days for the remainder of the photographs to be delivered.

So to summarize, provide your photographer with as much information when you first meet with the him/her as you possibly can, set clear expectations of your needs from the start, and always be truthful with both your photographer and yourself. Follow these tips and you’ll be bringing down those over-inflated photography quotes in no time.
