Three Helpful Hints For When You Ask For A Wedding Photography Proposal

So you’ve contacted a wedding photographer and they have offered you a quote for your wedding photography that is within your spending limits. Congratulations! You should accept it right away, right? WRONG! You probably could have worked out a much better deal if you had read this short article earlier.

Most people do not understand exactly what an estimate really is on it’s most basic level. At the end of the day, this quote represents the target price the photographer wants to exchange his/her time for. However, this quote represents more than the amount you will have to pay out for the photographer’s time. Keeping this in mind, how can you (as the client) bring down the amount of the quote so that it more precisely represents your idea of the value of the photographer’s time? Below are 3 considerations for you to keep in mind that may cause a photographer to push up the value of their time, and therefore increase the asking amount from you for their services.

1) Missing details
Professional photographers HATE missing information when trying to quote for a wedding. Generally, it is extremely challenging for professional photographers to garner the correct level of detail when they are constructing their quote. This is normally because clients offer the bare minimum of details when requesting a quote. Circumstances other than the quantity of time a photographer will be at the event matter significantly. For instance, if your wedding will be spread throughout several rooms a photographer will probably require an assistant and your quote will show this extra expense. On the other hand, if your wedding will be in a single room there may not be a need for the assistant. If the photographer does not have this information prior to releasing the quote, you can bet that the quote you receive reflects the worst case circumstance (i.e. the additional expense for the assistant’s income, insurance coverage, and so on).

2) Be realistic when giving the number of hours you will need the photographer’s services
Most engaged couples overstate the length of time they think that they’ll require a photographer to be at the wedding. Do you actually require the photographer for all 5 hours of the wedding reception? How many different angles do you really require of the same people drinking cocktails and eating? An hour or two of unnecessary photographer’s time can become rather expensive. Although, having said that, it is always better to overestimate than underestimate the length of time you will need the photographer on-site. Giving accurate hours is the fastest way to remove unnecessary costs from your quote.

3) Be sincere about when you require the final images delivered
If you have actually elected photo editing, do not request that the photographs be delivered by the next business day. If you need a few preliminary photos for thank you cards, Instagram, etc. following the wedding, then request that at the time of booking the photographer – don’t make this request on the wedding day itself or, even worse, during the reception. The chances that you need ALL of the photos finished within 72 hours is unlikely. There is little doubt that the photographer will attempt to oblige your request; however in order to do so, they will need to push off other work. Pushing off other work comes at a premium and will be reflected in your quote. For the most cost-effective quote, request the preliminary images that you really do need almost immediately and (specify exactly what these photos need to look like) and permit 7-10 business days for the rest of the images to be delivered.

So to summarize, supply your photographer with as much information at the first meeting as you possibly can, set clear expectations of your needs from the beginning, and always be truthful with both your photographer and yourself. Follow these pointers and you’ll be cutting those over-inflated photography quotes in no time.
