3 Tips When Asking For A Wedding Photography Quote

So you’ve contacted a wedding photographer and they have now given you a quote for your wedding photography that is within your budget. Congratulations! You should accept it right away, right? DEFINITELY NOT! You most likely could have negotiated a better deal if you had actually read this article earlier.

The majority of people don’t understand what an estimate actually is on it’s most fundamental level. At the end of the day, this quote represents the amount of money the photographer wants to exchange his/her efforts for. But, this quote represents more than the quantity you will need to pay out for the photographer’s time. Keeping this in mind, how can you (as the customer) reduce the stated quote so that it more accurately represents your own idea of the value of the photographer’s time? Below are 3 considerations for you to keep in mind that may encourage a photographer to push up the value of their time, and therefore increase the asking amount from you for their services.

1) Missing information
Professional photographers really can’t abide a lack of information when trying to quote for a job. Usually, it is extremely challenging for photographers to gather the proper level of info when they are developing their quote. This is typically because clients supply the bare minimum of information when requesting a quote. Situations other than the amount of time a photographer will be at the event matter greatly. For instance, if your wedding will be spread throughout several rooms a photographer will probably need an assistant and your quote will show this added expense. On the other hand, if your wedding will remain in a single space there might not be a need for the assistant. If the photographer does not have this information prior to providing the quote, you can guarantee that the quote you get shows the worst case circumstance (i.e. the extra expenditure for the assistant’s salary, insurance coverage, etc.).

2) Be reasonable when giving the amount of time you will require coverage
Most people overstate the amount of time they think they need a photographer to be at the wedding. Do you actually need the photographer for all 3 hours of the wedding reception? How many angles do you really require of the same guests drinking champagne and eating? An hour or more of unneeded service can become quite costly. Although, having said that, it is always much better to overestimate than underestimate the amount of time you will need the photographer on-site. Giving accurate hours is the fastest method to cut unneeded expenses from your quote.

3) Be honest about when you need the finished photos delivered
If you have actually chosen photo retouching, do not request that the images be finished by the next business day. If you need a few preliminary images for thank you cards, Instagram, etc. after the wedding, then request for that when you are booking the photographer – don’t make this request on the wedding day itself or, even worse, during the reception. The chances that you require ALL of the photos finished within 72 hours is unusual. There is little doubt that the photographer will try to honor your demand; however in order to do so, they will need to push off other work. Pushing off work comes at a premium and will be reflected in your quote. For the most cost-effective quote, ask for the initial photos that you really do need almost immediately and (specify exactly what these photos have to contain) and allow 7-10 business days for the remainder of the photos to be delivered to you.

So to summarize, provide your photographer with as much information when you first meet with the him/her as you possibly can, set clear expectations of your needs from the beginning, and always be truthful with both your photographer and yourself. Follow these suggestions and you’ll be cutting those over-inflated photography quotes in no time.
