A Few Questions To Ask When Hiring a Sports Photographer

If the answer is no then I would advise you to stop right there. No need to continue the conversation. If you employ a friend or someone you know to take the photographs, and they have an accident, who is going to pay for the medical bills. Keep in mind in the USA people sue very quickly so you need to be protected.

If the answer is yes, then keep questioning to see how much coverage is afforded inside the insurance, what does and doesn’t it cover, and who is liable for any out of pocket expense that aren’t covered?

Also make sure you get a copy of the insurance before the event just to be sure the insurance policy really does exist and that it is still active.

You ought to know how long the person has been a sports photographer, where they did their photographic training and what qualifications, if any do they have. Do they belong to any photographer associations or if they’ve ever won any photgraphy competitions. If the answer is yes, always ask to see evidence.

Any confidant and experienced sports photographer will have no problem in offering references from previous clients. Be sure to call them and ask questions such as:

  • Was the photographer easy to work with?
  • What were the end results like? Were you satisfied?
  • Would you employ him/her again?

Request to look at samples of their work from different events. This will give you a good sense of the depth of their work and how good they really are. Also, by looking at different events you will get a good idea of whether or not the photographer is always good…or just lucky every now and then.

By having could help to make the shoot run a lot more smoothly. Two heads are better than one, right? An assistant or second photographer could mean have the same shots taken from different angles and therefore displaying different effects. Also, there will be a a little insurance that they will not miss shots should the equipment of the first photographer break down.

It is very important that you establish exactly what you are getting for your money before you hire the sports photographer. How long will the photographer be at the event? How many photographs will be delivered? How will the proofs be delivered? Will there be post-production editing of images so any blemishes can be removed? Does the package that you choose include albums or framed photographs?

In addition, make sure you ask how long you have to decide which photographs you would like delivered after seeing the proofs, and how long does it take to receive the final photographs?

It’s really important to ask all these questions and don’t make assumptions. Then you can avoid disappointment and arguments because your expectations weren’t met.
