Questions You Should Ask When Hiring a Sports Photographer

If the photographer answers is no then stop right there and look for an alternative photographer. No need to continue the conversation. If you hire a relative or someone you know to take the photographs, and they have an accident, who is going to pay for the medical expenses. Remember in the United States people sue very quickly so you need to protect yourself.

If the answer is yes, then continue asking questions to find out how much coverage the insurance carries, what does and doesn’t it cover, and who is liable for any out of pocket expense that the insurance doesn’t cover?

Also ensure that you get a copy of the insurance before the event to to make sure the insurance policy really does exist and that it is still current.

You will want to know how long the person has been a sports photographer, where they carried out their photographic training and what diplomas, if any do they have. Ask if they belong to any photographer associations or if they’ve ever won any photographic competitions. If the answer is yes, always ask to see proof.

Any good and experienced sports photographer should have no problem in offering references from previous customers. Make sure you call them and get their take on the photographer. Ask questions such as:

  • Was he/she a pleasure to work with?
  • What were the final shots like? Were you happy?
  • Would you use this same photographer again?

Request to see samples of their work from different events. This will give you a good idea of the depth of their work and how good they are. In addition, by looking at different events you will get a good idea of whether or not the photographer is consistently good…or just lucky every once in a while.

By having could help to make the shoot run more smoothly. Two heads are better than one, right? An assistant or second photographer could mean have the same shots taken from different angles and therefore showing different effects. Finally, there will be a a bit of insurance of not missing shots if the equipment of the first photographer breaks down.

It’s vital to establish exactly what it is that you are getting for your money before you hire the sports photographer. How long will the photographer stay at the event? How many photographs will you get? How will the proofs be delivered? Will the photographer carry out any post-production editing of photographs to remove any blemishes? Does the package that you choose include albums or framed photographs?

Also, ensure that you ask how long you have to decide which images you would like delivered after seeing the proofs, and how long it takes to receive the final photographs?

It’s vital that you ask all these questions and don’t make assumptions. That way you can avoid disappointment and arguments because your expectations weren’t met.
