Questions You Should Ask When You Are Considering Hiring a Sports Photographer

If the answer is no then stop right there. No need to continue the discussion. If you employ a friend or aquaintance to take the photographs, and they cause an accident, who is going to cover for the medical bills. Remember in the United States people sue very quickly so you need to protect yourself.

If the answer is yes, then continue questioning to see how much coverage the insurance carries, what does and doesn’t it cover, and who is liable for any out of pocket expense that the insurance doesn’t cover?

Also make sure you get a copy of the insurance prior to the event just to be sure the insurance policy really does exist and that it is still current.

You will need to know how long the applicant has been a sports photographer, where they did their photgraphy training and what qualifications, if any that they have. Ask if they belong to any photographer associations or if they’ve ever won any photographic competitions. If the answer is yes, always ask to see evidence.

Any good and reliable sports photographer should have no problem in providing you with references from previous customers. Make sure you call them and get their take on the photographer. Ask questions such as:

  • Was he/she a pleasure to work with?
  • What were the final shots like? Were you happy?
  • Would you hire him/her again?

Request to look at samples of their work from different events. This shouldl give you a good sense of the depth of the photographer’s work and how good they really are. In addition, by looking at different events you will get a good idea of whether or not the photographer is consistently good…or just lucky every now and then.

By having could help to make the shoot run more smoothly. Two heads are better than one, right? An assistant or second photographer could mean have the same shots taken from different angles and therefore showing different effects. Also, there will be a little bit of insurance that they will not miss shots if the equipment of the first photographer breaks down.

It’s very important that you establish exactly what you are getting for your money before you sign any contracts. How long will the photographer stay at the sporting event? How many photographs will you get? How will you receive the proofs? Will there be post-production editing of images so any blemishes can be removed? Wiil the package include albums or framed photographs?

Also, ensure that you ask how long you have to decide which images you would like delivered after seeing the proofs, and how long does it take to receive the final photographs?

Seriously, it’s really important to ask all these questions and don’t just assume. Doing this means that you can avoid disappointment and arguments because your expectations haven’t been met.
