A Few Questions To Ask When Hiring a Sports Photographer

If the answer is no then stop right there and look for an alternative photographer. No need to continue the discussion. Should you employ a friend or aquaintance to take the photographs, and they have an accident, who is going to pay for the medical bills. Keep in mind in the USA people sue very quickly so you need to protect yourself.

If the answer is yes, then continue asking questions to see how much coverage is afforded inside the insurance, what is and isn’t included in the policy, and who has to pay for any out of pocket expense that aren’t covered?

Also ensure that you get a copy of the insurance prior to the event to to be sure the insurance really does exist and that it is still current.

You will need to know how long the applicant has been doing sports photography, where they carried out their photographic training and what certifications, if any do they have. Ask if they belong to any photographer associations and if they’ve ever won any photographic competitions. If the answer is yes, always ask to see evidence.

A good and experienced sports photographer will have no problem in providing you with references from previous customers. Be sure to call them and get their take on the photographer. Ask questions such as:

  • Was he/she easy to work with?
  • What were the end results like? Were you satisfied?
  • Would you use this same photographer again?

Ask to see samples of their work from different sporting events. This will give you a better idea of the depth of the photographer’s work and how good they are. In addition, by checking out different events you will get a good idea of whether or not the photographer is always good…or just lucky every now and then.

Having an assistant or second photographer could possibly make the shoot run more smoothly. Two heads are better than one, right? An assistant or second photographer will also mean have the same pictures taken from different angles and therefore displaying different effects. Also, there will be a a bit of insurance that they will not miss shots should the equipment of the first photographer break down.

It is very important to establish exactly what it is that you are getting for your money before you hire the sports photographer. How much time will the photographer be at the event? How many photos will you get? How will the proofs be delivered? Will there be post-production editing of images so any blemishes can be removed? Does the package include albums or framed photographs?

In addition, make sure that you ask how long you have to decide which photographs you would like delivered after seeing the proofs, and how long it takes to receive the final delivery?

Seriously, it’s vital that you ask all these questions and don’t make assumptions. That way you can avoid disappointment and arguments because your expectations haven’t been met.
