Questions You Should Ask When Hiring a Sports Photographer

If the photographer answers is no then stop right there and look for an alternative photographer. No need to continue the conversation. Should you hire a relative or aquaintance to carry out the task, and they trip and injure someone, who is going to cover for the medical bills. Remember in the United States people sue very quickly so you need to protect yourself.

If the answer is yes, then continue asking questions to find out how much coverage the insurance carries, what does and doesn’t it cover, and who is liable for any deductions that aren’t covered?

Also ensure that you get a copy of the insurance prior to the event just to make sure the insurance really does exist and that it is still active.

You ought to know how long the person has been doing sports photography, where they carried out their photographic training and what diplomas, if any do they have. Ask if they belong to any photographer associations and if they’ve ever won any photographic competitions. If the answer is yes, always ask to see evidence.

Any good and experienced sports photographer will have no problem in offering references from previous customers. Be sure to call them and get their take on the photographer. Ask questions such as:

  • Was the photographer easy to work with?
  • What were the end results like? Were you satisfied?
  • Would you hire this same photographer again?

Request to see samples of their sports photography from different sporting events. This shouldl give you a better sense of the depth of their work and how good they really are. In addition, by checking out different events this will give you an idea of whether or not the photographer is consistently good…or just lucky every now and then.

By having could possibly make the shoot run more smoothly. Two heads are better than one, and all that! An assistant or second photographer could mean have the same pictures taken from different angles and therefore displaying different effects. Also, there will be a little bit of insurance that they will not miss shots should the equipment of the first photographer break down.

It’s vital to establish exactly what it is that you’re getting for your money before you sign any contracts. How long will the photographer stay at the sporting event? How many photos will you get? How will the proofs be delivered? Will the photographer carry out any post-production editing of photos so any blemishes can be removed? Wiil the package you choose include albums or framed photographs?

Also, make sure that you ask how long you have to decide which photographs you would like delivered after seeing the proofs, and how long it takes to receive the final delivery?

Seriously, it’s vital that you ask these questions and don’t just assume. Doing this means that you can avoid disappointment and arguments because your expectations haven’t been met.
