A Few Things To Ask When Hiring a Sports Photographer

If the photographer answers is no then I would advise you to stop right there. No need to continue the conversation. Should you hire a friend or aquaintance to carry out the task, and they trip and injure someone, who is going to cover for the medical bills. Remember in the USA people sue very quickly so you need to protect yourself.

If the answer is yes, then continue asking questions to see how much coverage the insurance carries, what is and isn’t included in the policy, and who has to pay for any out of pocket expense that the insurance doesn’t cover?

Also make sure you get a copy of the insurance before the event just to be sure the insurance really does exist and that it is still active.

You will need to know how long the vendor has been a sports photographer, where they carried out their photographic training and what diplomas, if any that they have. Do they belong to any photographer associations or if they’ve ever won any photographic competitions. If the answer is yes, always ask to see evidence.

Any confidant and experienced sports photographer should have no problem in providing you with references from previous customers. Make sure you call them and ask questions such as:

  • Was he/she easy to work with?
  • What were the final shots like? Were you happy?
  • Would you use him/her again?

Ask to look at samples of their sports photography from different events. This will give you a better idea of the depth of the photographer’s work and how good they really are. Also, by checking out different events this will give you an idea of whether or not the photographer is always good…or just lucky every now and then.

By having could help to make the shoot run a lot more smoothly. Two heads are better than one, and all that! An assistant or second photographer could mean have the same pictures taken from different angles and therefore showing different effects. Also, there will be a little bit of insurance that they will not miss shots if the equipment of the first photographer breaks down.

It is important that you establish exactly what you’re getting for your money before you hire the sports photographer. How long will the photographer remain at the sporting event? How many photographs will you get? How will the proofs be delivered? Will there be post-production editing of photos so any blemishes can be removed? Does the package include albums or framed photographs?

In addition, make sure you ask how long you have to decide which photographs you would like delivered after seeing the proofs, and how long it takes to get the final photographs?

It’s vital that you ask all these questions and don’t just assume. Then you can avoid disappointment and arguments because your expectations weren’t met.
