A Few Questions To Ask When You Are Considering Hiring a Sports Photographer

If the photographer answers is no then stop right there and look for an alternative photographer. No need to continue the discussion. If you employ a friend or someone you know to take the photographs, and they trip and injure someone, who is going to pay for the medical bills. Keep in mind in the USA people sue very quickly so you need to protect yourself.

If the answer is yes, then keep questioning to see how much coverage the insurance carries, what does and doesn’t it cover, and who is liable for any out of pocket expense that the insurance doesn’t cover?

Also ensure that you get a copy of the insurance prior to the event just to make sure the insurance really does exist and that it is still active.

You will want to know how long the applicant has been doing sports photography, where they did their photgraphy training and what certifications, if any do they have. Do they belong to any photographer associations or if they’ve ever won any photgraphy competitions. If the answer is yes, always ask to see proof.

A confidant and reliable sports photographer will have no problem in offering references from previous customers. Make sure you call them and get their take on the photographer. Ask questions such as:

  • Was he/she a pleasure to work with?
  • What were the final shots like? Were you satisfied?
  • Would you use him/her again?

Ask to see samples of their work from different sporting events. This shouldl give you a better idea of the depth of their work and how good they are. In addition, by checking out different events this will give you an idea of whether or not the photographer is consistently good…or just lucky every once in a while.

Having an assistant or second photographer could help to make the shoot run more smoothly. Two heads are better than one, and all that! An assistant or second photographer will also mean have the same shots taken from different angles and therefore showing different effects. Finally, there will be a a little insurance of not missing shots should the equipment of the first photographer break down.

It is very important that you establish exactly what you’re getting for your money before you hire the sports photographer. How long will the photographer be at the event? How many photographs will you get? How will you receive the proofs? Will there be post-production editing of photos so any blemishes can be removed? Does the package that you choose include albums or framed photographs?

Also, make sure that you ask how long you have to decide which photos you would like delivered after seeing the proofs, and how long does it take to get the final photographs?

Seriously, it’s really important to ask these questions and don’t just assume. Doing this means that you can avoid disappointment and arguments because your expectations weren’t met.
