A Few Things To Ask When You Are Considering Hiring a Sports Photographer

If the photographer answers is no then I would advise you to stop right there. No need to continue the conversation. Should you hire a friend or aquaintance to take the photographs, and they have an accident, who is going to pay for the medical bills. Keep in mind in the United States people sue very quickly so you need to be protected.

If the answer is yes, then keep questioning to see how much coverage the insurance carries, what is and isn’t included in the policy, and who is liable for any out of pocket expense that aren’t covered?

Also ensure that you get a copy of the insurance before the event to to make sure the insurance really does exist and that it is still current.

You will need to know how long the vendor has been a sports photographer, where they carried out their photographic training and what diplomas, if any that they have. Do they belong to any photographer associations or if they’ve ever won any photgraphy competitions. If the answer is yes, always ask to see evidence.

Any reputable and experienced sports photographer should have no problem in offering references from previous clients. Be sure to call them and ask questions such as:

  • Was the photographer a pleasure to work with?
  • What were the end results like? Were you satisfied?
  • Would you use him/her again?

Request to see samples of their work from different events. This will give you a better idea of the depth of their work and how good they are. Also, by viewing different events you will get a good idea of whether or not the photographer is consistently good…or just lucky every now and then.

Having an assistant or second photographer could possibly make the shoot run a lot more smoothly. Two heads are better than one, right? An assistant or second photographer will also mean have the same pictures taken from different angles and therefore displaying different effects. Finally, there will be a little bit of insurance of not missing shots should the equipment of the first photographer break down.

It is vital that you establish exactly what you are getting for your money before you sign any contracts. How much time will the photographer be at the sporting event? How many photographs will be delivered? How will the proofs be delivered? Will there be post-production editing of photos so any blemishes can be removed? Does the package you choose include albums or framed photographs?

Also, ensure you ask how long you have to decide which photos you would like delivered after seeing the proofs, and how long does it take to receive the final delivery?

It’s really important to ask all these questions and don’t make assumptions. Doing this means that you can avoid disappointment and arguments because your expectations haven’t been met.
