Questions You Should Ask When You Are Considering Hiring a Sports Photographer

If the photographer answers is no then I would advise you to stop right there. No need to continue the discussion. Should you employ a relative or aquaintance to take the photographs, and they trip and injure someone, who is going to cover for the medical bills. Remember in the United States people sue very quickly so you need to be protected.

If the answer is yes, then keep asking questions to find out how much coverage the insurance carries, what does and doesn’t it cover, and who has to pay for any deductions that aren’t covered?

Also make sure you get a copy of the insurance prior to the event just to make sure the insurance really does exist and that it is still current.

You will want to know how long the applicant has been a sports photographer, where they did their photographic training and what certifications, if any that they have. Do they belong to any photographer associations and if they’ve ever won any photographic competitions. If the answer is yes, always ask to see proof.

Any good and experienced sports photographer will have no problem in offering references from previous customers. Be sure to call them and get their take on the photographer. Ask questions such as:

  • Was the photographer a pleasure to work with?
  • What were the end results like? Were you happy?
  • Would you hire him/her again?

Ask to see samples of their work from different events. This shouldl give you a better sense of the depth of their work and how good they are. In addition, by viewing different events this will give you an idea of whether or not the photographer is always good…or just lucky every now and then.

By having could possibly make the shoot run a lot more smoothly. Two heads are better than one, and all that! An assistant or second photographer will also mean have the same pictures taken from different angles and therefore showing different effects. Finally, there will be a a bit of insurance of not missing shots if the equipment of the first photographer breaks down.

It’s important to establish exactly what you’re getting for your money before you hire the sports photographer. How much time will the photographer be at the sporting event? Exactly how many images will be delivered? How will the proofs be delivered? Will the photographer do any post-production editing of photographs so any blemishes can be removed? Does the package that you choose include albums or framed photographs?

In addition, make sure that you ask how long you have to decide which photographs you would like delivered after seeing the proofs, and how long does it take to get the final photographs?

Seriously, it’s really important to ask these questions and don’t just assume. Doing this means that you can avoid disappointment and arguments because your expectations haven’t been met.
