Questions You Should Ask When You Are Considering Hiring a Sports Photographer

If the photographer answers is no then stop right there and look for an alternative photographer. No need to continue the conversation. Should you hire a relative or aquaintance to carry out the task, and they cause an accident, who is going to cover for the medical expenses. Remember in the USA people sue very quickly so you need to be protected.

If the answer is yes, then continue asking questions to see how much coverage the insurance carries, what does and doesn’t it cover, and who is liable for any out of pocket expense that aren’t covered?

Also ensure that you get a copy of the insurance before the event just to make sure the insurance really does exist and that it is still current.

You will need to know how long the applicant has been doing sports photography, where they carried out their photographic training and what certifications, if any that they have. Do they belong to any photographer associations and if they’ve ever won any photographic competitions. If the answer is yes, always ask to see proof.

Any good and reliable sports photographer should have no problem in offering references from previous customers. Be sure to call them and get their take on the photographer. Ask questions such as:

  • Was he/she easy to work with?
  • What were the end results like? Were you happy?
  • Would you use him/her again?

Ask to see samples of their work from different events. This will give you a better sense of the depth of the photographer’s work and how good they really are. In addition, by looking at different events this will give you an idea of whether or not the photographer is consistently good…or just lucky every now and then.

By having could help to make the shoot run more smoothly. Two heads are better than one, right? An assistant or second photographer could mean have the same pictures taken from different angles and therefore showing different effects. Also, there will be a a bit of insurance that they will not miss shots should the equipment of the first photographer break down.

It’s very important to establish exactly what you’re getting for your money before you sign any contracts. How much time will the photographer be at the event? Exactly how many photographs will be delivered? How will you receive the proofs? Will the photographer carry out any post-production editing of photographs to remove any blemishes? Wiil the package that you choose include albums or framed photographs?

In addition, ensure that you ask how long you have to decide which photographs you would like delivered after seeing the proofs, and how long it takes to receive the final delivery?

Seriously, it’s vital that you ask these questions and don’t just assume. Then you can avoid disappointment and arguments because your expectations haven’t been met.
