Questions You Should Ask When Hiring a Sports Photographer

If the photographer answers is no then stop right there and look for an alternative photographer. No need to continue the conversation. If you employ a relative or aquaintance to carry out the task, and they trip and injure someone, who is going to pay for the medical bills. Remember in the United States people sue very quickly so you need to protect yourself.

If the answer is yes, then keep asking questions to find out how much coverage the insurance carries, what is and isn’t included in the policy, and who is liable for any out of pocket expense that aren’t covered?

Also make sure you get a copy of the insurance prior to the event to to be sure the insurance really does exist and that it is still current.

You should know how long the applicant has been a sports photographer, where they carried out their photgraphy training and what diplomas, if any that they have. Do they belong to any photographer associations and if they’ve ever won any photgraphy competitions. If the answer is yes, always ask to see proof.

Any reputable and experienced sports photographer will have no problem in providing you with references from previous customers. Be sure to call them and ask questions such as:

  • Was he/she a pleasure to work with?
  • What were the final shots like? Were you happy?
  • Would you use him/her again?

Request to see samples of their work from different events. This will give you a better sense of the depth of the photographer’s work and how good they really are. In addition, by viewing different events this will give you an idea of whether or not the photographer is consistently good…or just lucky every once in a while.

By having could help to make the shoot run more smoothly. Two heads are better than one, right? An assistant or second photographer could mean have the same pictures taken from different angles and therefore showing different effects. Finally, there will be a a little insurance of not missing shots if the equipment of the first photographer breaks down.

It is important to establish exactly what you’re getting for your money before you sign any contracts. How long will the photographer be at the sporting event? How many photographs will you get? How will you receive the proofs to choose from? Will there be post-production editing of photographs to remove any blemishes? Does the package that you choose include albums or framed photographs?

Also, make sure you ask how long you have to decide which photographs you would like delivered after seeing the proofs, and how long does it take to receive the final delivery?

It’s vital that you ask all these questions and don’t make assumptions. Doing this means that you can avoid disappointment and arguments because your expectations haven’t been met.
