A Few Things To Ask When Hiring a Sports Photographer

If the answer is no then I would advise you to stop right there. No need to continue the discussion. If you hire a relative or someone you know to take the photographs, and they trip and injure someone, who is going to cover for the medical expenses. Keep in mind in the USA people sue very quickly so you need to protect yourself.

If the answer is yes, then continue questioning to find out how much coverage is afforded inside the insurance, what is and isn’t included in the policy, and who is liable for any deductions that aren’t covered?

Also make sure you get a copy of the insurance before the event to to make sure the insurance really does exist and that it is still current.

You will need to know how long the applicant has been a sports photographer, where they carried out their photographic training and what certifications, if any do they have. Ask if they belong to any photographer associations and if they’ve ever won any photgraphy competitions. If the answer is yes, always ask to see evidence.

Any good and experienced sports photographer should have no problem in offering references from previous customers. Be sure to call them and get their opinons of the photographer. Ask questions such as:

  • Was the photographer a pleasure to work with?
  • What were the final shots like? Were you satisfied?
  • Would you hire him/her again?

Request to see samples of their sports photography from different sporting events. This will give you a good idea of the depth of the photographer’s work and how good they are. Also, by viewing different events this will give you an idea of whether or not the photographer is consistently good…or just lucky every now and then.

Having an assistant or second photographer could help to make the shoot run more smoothly. Two heads are better than one, right? An assistant or second photographer will also mean have the same pictures taken from different angles and therefore showing different effects. Finally, there will be a little bit of insurance that they will not miss shots should the equipment of the first photographer break down.

It is vital that you establish exactly what it is that you’re getting for your money before you sign any contracts. How much time will the photographer be at the event? How many images will be delivered? How will the proofs be delivered? Will there be post-production editing of photographs to remove any blemishes? Wiil the package include albums or framed photographs?

In addition, make sure that you ask how long you have to decide which photos you would like delivered after seeing the proofs, and how long does it take to get the final delivery?

Seriously, it’s really important to ask these questions and don’t just assume. That way you can avoid disappointment and arguments because your expectations haven’t been met.
