A Few Questions To Ask When You Are Considering Hiring a Sports Photographer

If the answer is no then I would advise you to stop right there. No need to continue the conversation. If you hire a relative or aquaintance to carry out the task, and they trip and injure someone, who is going to pay for the medical expenses. Remember in the United States people sue very quickly so you need to protect yourself.

If the answer is yes, then keep questioning to find out how much coverage is afforded inside the insurance, what is and isn’t included in the policy, and who is liable for any deductions that the insurance doesn’t cover?

Also ensure that you get a copy of the insurance before the event just to be sure the insurance really does exist and that it is still active.

You will want to know how long the vendor has been a sports photographer, where they carried out their photgraphy training and what certifications, if any do they have. Ask if they belong to any photographer associations or if they’ve ever won any photgraphy competitions. If the answer is yes, always ask to see proof.

Any confidant and reliable sports photographer will have no problem in offering references from previous customers. Make sure you call them and ask questions such as:

  • Was he/she a pleasure to work with?
  • What were the final shots like? Were you happy?
  • Would you use this same photographer again?

Request to see samples of their work from different sporting events. This will give you a good sense of the depth of the photographer’s work and how good they are. In addition, by looking at different events this will give you an idea of whether or not the photographer is always good…or just lucky every once in a while.

By having could help to make the shoot run a lot more smoothly. Two heads are better than one, and all that! An assistant or second photographer could mean have the same shots taken from different angles and therefore displaying different effects. Also, there will be a little bit of insurance that they will not miss shots if the equipment of the first photographer breaks down.

It is vital that you establish exactly what you are getting for your money before you sign any contracts. How long will the photographer be at the event? Exactly how many images will be delivered? How will you receive the proofs to choose from? Will there be post-production editing of images so any blemishes can be removed? Wiil the package that you choose include albums or framed photographs?

Also, ensure that you ask how long you have to decide which photographs you would like delivered after seeing the proofs, and how long does it take to receive the final photographs?

It’s really important to ask all these questions and don’t just assume. Doing this means that you can avoid disappointment and arguments because your expectations weren’t met.
