A Few Questions To Ask When Hiring a Sports Photographer

If the photographer answers is no then I would advise you to stop right there and look for an alternative photographer. No need to continue the conversation. If you hire a relative or someone you know to carry out the task, and they have an accident, who is going to cover for the medical expenses. Remember in the United States people sue very quickly so you need to protect yourself.

If the answer is yes, then keep asking questions to see how much coverage the insurance carries, what is and isn’t included in the policy, and who has to pay for any out of pocket expense that the insurance doesn’t cover?

Also ensure that you get a copy of the insurance before the event just to make sure the insurance policy really does exist and that it is still active.

You ought to know how long the applicant has been doing sports photography, where they carried out their photographic training and what certifications, if any do they have. Ask if they belong to any photographer associations or if they’ve ever won any photgraphy competitions. If the answer is yes, always ask to see proof.

A good and reliable sports photographer should have no problem in providing you with references from previous customers. Be sure to call them and ask questions such as:

  • Was the photographer a pleasure to work with?
  • What were the final shots like? Were you happy?
  • Would you use him/her again?

Request to see samples of their work from different events. This shouldl give you a good idea of the depth of the photographer’s work and how good they are. Also, by looking at different events this will give you an idea of whether or not the photographer is always good…or just lucky every now and then.

By having could possibly make the shoot run more smoothly. Two heads are better than one, and all that! An assistant or second photographer will also mean have the same shots taken from different angles and therefore displaying different effects. Also, there will be a a little insurance of not missing shots if the equipment of the first photographer breaks down.

It is very important to establish exactly what it is that you’re getting for your money before you sign any contracts. How long will the photographer remain at the sporting event? How many images will be delivered? How will the proofs be delivered? Will there be post-production editing of photos so any blemishes can be removed? Does the package that you choose include albums or framed photographs?

Also, make sure that you ask how long you have to decide which images you would like delivered after seeing the proofs, and how long does it take to get the final photographs?

It’s vital that you ask these questions and don’t make assumptions. That way you can avoid disappointment and arguments because your expectations weren’t met.
