Questions You Should Ask When You Are Considering Hiring a Sports Photographer

If the photographer answers is no then I would advise you to stop right there. No need to continue the conversation. If you hire a relative or aquaintance to carry out the task, and they trip and injure someone, who is going to pay for the medical bills. Remember in the United States people sue very quickly so you need to protect yourself.

If the answer is yes, then keep asking questions to see how much coverage the insurance carries, what does and doesn’t it cover, and who has to pay for any out of pocket expense that the insurance doesn’t cover?

Also ensure that you get a copy of the insurance prior to the event just to be sure the insurance policy really does exist and that it is still active.

You should know how long the applicant has been doing sports photography, where they carried out their photgraphy training and what certifications, if any that they have. Ask if they belong to any photographer associations and if they’ve ever won any photographic competitions. If the answer is yes, always ask to see proof.

Any confidant and reliable sports photographer should have no problem in providing you with references from previous clients. Be sure to call them and get their opinons of the photographer. Ask questions such as:

  • Was the photographer a pleasure to work with?
  • What were the end results like? Were you satisfied?
  • Would you hire him/her again?

Ask to look at samples of their work from different events. This will give you a good idea of the depth of the photographer’s work and how good they are. In addition, by looking at different events this will give you an idea of whether or not the photographer is consistently good…or just lucky every once in a while.

Having an assistant or second photographer could help to make the shoot run more smoothly. Two heads are better than one, and all that! An assistant or second photographer could mean have the same shots taken from different angles and therefore showing different effects. Finally, there will be a little bit of insurance of not missing shots if the equipment of the first photographer breaks down.

It is vital to establish exactly what it is that you’re getting for your money before you hire the sports photographer. How long will the photographer remain at the event? How many photographs will you get? How will you receive the proofs to choose from? Will the photographer do any post-production editing of photographs to remove any blemishes? Does the package that you choose include albums or framed photographs?

In addition, make sure that you ask how long you have to decide which images you would like delivered after seeing the proofs, and how long it takes to receive the final photographs?

It’s really important to ask all these questions and don’t make assumptions. That way you can avoid disappointment and arguments because your expectations weren’t met.
