A Few Things To Ask When You Are Considering Hiring a Sports Photographer

If the answer is no then stop right there and look for an alternative photographer. No need to continue the conversation. Should you employ a friend or someone you know to take the photographs, and they cause an accident, who is going to pay for the medical expenses. Remember in the United States people sue very quickly so you need to be protected.

If the answer is yes, then keep questioning to see how much coverage is afforded inside the insurance, what is and isn’t included in the policy, and who is liable for any deductions that aren’t covered?

Also ensure that you get a copy of the insurance before the event just to be sure the insurance policy really does exist and that it is still current.

You should know how long the person has been doing sports photography, where they did their photgraphy training and what diplomas, if any that they have. Do they belong to any photographer associations or if they’ve ever won any photgraphy competitions. If the answer is yes, always ask to see evidence.

A good and reliable sports photographer will have no problem in offering references from previous customers. Be sure to call them and ask questions such as:

  • Was he/she easy to work with?
  • What were the end results like? Were you satisfied?
  • Would you employ him/her again?

Request to look at samples of their work from different events. This shouldl give you a better sense of the depth of the photographer’s work and how good they are. In addition, by checking out different events this will give you an idea of whether or not the photographer is consistently good…or just lucky every once in a while.

Having an assistant or second photographer could help to make the shoot run a lot more smoothly. Two heads are better than one, and all that! An assistant or second photographer could mean have the same shots taken from different angles and therefore displaying different effects. Also, there will be a little bit of insurance of not missing shots if the equipment of the first photographer breaks down.

It’s important to establish exactly what it is that you are getting for your money before you sign any contracts. How long will the photographer be at the event? How many images will be delivered? How will the proofs be delivered? Will there be post-production editing of images to remove any blemishes? Wiil the package you choose include albums or framed photographs?

In addition, make sure that you ask how long you have to decide which images you would like delivered after seeing the proofs, and how long does it take to receive the final delivery?

Seriously, it’s really important to ask these questions and don’t just assume. Doing this means that you can avoid disappointment and arguments because your expectations weren’t met.
